Possible move to Austin, TX

Anonymous
A good job offer has us considering a move to Austin TX from the DMV.

Can anyone talk to me about high schools, neighborhoods and country clubs?

Is there a well-regarded, academically focused, private school in Austin or surrounds? Or do most people go to public schools? We would be keeping our DMV house for the foreseeable future, mainly because it's paid off, but also because we aren't sure if our last remaining child at home will want to do his last year at his private school here, boarding school, or at school in Texas.

Housing could be condo/townhouse or a SFH, but would like to keep the budget between $1-1.5mill.

Would like to join a country club for tennis, golf is not a requirement.

What would be a good neighborhood for an older family who likes to run, isn't particularly 'cool', and doesn't know ANYONE in the city?

It's kind of dumpy out there. Do not expect Nova lifestyle...for that, you would need to live in Dallas.

What's so special about a NOVA lifestyle that you can't find in Austin?

I'm not interested in replicating the "NOVA lifestyle" (?)

I would like to learn more about neighborhoods, schools (especially private schools), and the different vibes at local tennis or country clubs.

Thanks!

I get what you are saying but I am super liberal and thsi is not helpful. Texas is a whole state, and Austin is a blue dot with real people living there. If you really want to see change in this country through electing new democrats into office, you should support blue people moving to red states, right? Your post comes off as reactionary and simple. Do better.

Have you not read PP's post?

I think they are probably not worrying about any of that

DP. Thank you for being a voice of trash to the crazy above.

Cities are generally blue, even if they are in red states.

I hear PP on the reproductive concerns, but I have no doubt that’s one of many factors (ie, not the only one) that go into something as important as moving your family cross country.

West Lake has good schools and a nice country club.

Traffic is a real challenge in Austin. Where would you are spouse be working?

I know several ultra rich people in Austin whose kids attend public high school. From that I infer that it’s a public school culture.

Strike Regents from your consideration. Its ultra conservative but people like that its cheap. I'd recommend based on more factors about your kids like age, interests, academic proficiency, languages spoken, tech/stem, drama, art interests and what kind of crowd they gravitate toward.

Look in Tarrytown and Pemberton Heights -- old neighborhoods and older homes. That budget will be tough in such a central location and yes, you will probably settle for a condo or something very small. But it'll be walkable and commutable. As for country clubs, if you only want tennis and want to stay central, join Westwood right on the lake at the bottom of Mount Bonnell and across from Laguna Gloria.

Re private schools, St. Andrew's or St. Stephens. St. Stephens is a drive out, but such an interesting school and has produced some amazing graduates.

What a fun town full of really bright people. Get used to having a more active social life and going out to hear a lot of music.
