Did you know Mathew Broderick killed two women in 1987?

+1 I’m 52 and knew this. It also got some mentions recently when the wife of an American stationed in the UK killed people in a similar fashion - not drunk or speeding just driving on the wrong side of the road.

My neighbor is a UK citizen and apparently she was in an MVA with injury the first month she was here for the same reason. She just made a left turn at a 4 way stop into the oncoming right road lane. I think her worst problem was having her license suspended while she re-completed driver training but she drives today.

I'm more worried for her since she was widowed this past year and she doesn't have her US citizenship and now she's afraid to draw attention to herself and apply for it. She has two adult kids and two teenagers still.

I didn't get my license until I was 30 for exactly this reason.

I still can't parallel park even after 30 more years.

She was badly injured and he didn’t let her get checked out in the hospital because of his pride - she later developed back issues and when she went on dancing with the stars and got injured, a back surgeon said she’d essentially been walking around one tiny wrong move and she could be paralyzed for life. I believe she eventually had back surgery.

She did not paint him as a good person at all. He constantly cheated with her too. It makes me doubt that he stayed faithful to Sarah Jessica.

Chatter about his cheating for a long time. SJP stated she intended to remain married, no matter what. Makes sense, I guess. He does sound awful.

Yes I knew. I'm afraid of driving in the UK or Ireland because you have to drive on the other side of the road and from the passenger side of the car. I don't think I could do it.

I also had zero idea.

Stars often have this stuff scrubbed from the internet.

See also Whoopi’s “rape rape” comments. For which she received mild backlash.

It never needs to be scrubbed from the internet if it never happened while the internet was in existence!

Old news. I’m 47.

Yes I knew. I’m 53 and saw Broderick on Broadway when I was in 9th or 10th grade. He was amazing so I’ve followed him ever since.

Jennifer Grey (who played Ferris Bueller's sister) was in the car with him. They were dating at the time. He broke his leg pretty badly in the accident.
I absolutely refused to rent a car when I visited the UK because I knew I wouldn't be a safe driver.

🙄

Stuff is archived on the internet all the time. That’s how you can access articles that were published before the internet existed.

I'm sure I saw news coverage of it or like tabloid headlines about it, but I was 7 and did not know who Matthew Broderick was at that point, because I was too young to have seen or appreciated Ferris Bueller at that age.

I did know about the Laura Bush thing because in addition to it being covered during her husband's campaigns, I have a lot of family from Midland including people who went to school with Laura and George (he moved away after elementary and went to boarding school after that, so people don't really remember him well). Laura's accident was something almost everyone knew about because it was so tragic and it was not a big town. She ran a stop sign while driving at night and hit another car and the driver died. But the crazy thing is that she knew boy who died, who was also a teenager, and they'd actually dated previously. Most people I know who knew her thought was a very nice person despite that ordeal. People are pretty religious down there so I think that's sort of how the community got through it, including Laura.

In today’s world, Busch probably would have been charged.

Until fairly recently, almost all UK/Irish rental cars were stick shift, which made it even harder to drive there if you’re not used to it. My usually-stoic brother cried while trying to negotiate a tricky series of intersections and roundabouts in England once. He eventually pulled over until he could calm down and figure it all out.
