Did you know Mathew Broderick killed two women in 1987?

I knew this. Tragic accident.

I am 45 and when I read the thread title, I was like "that can't be right" but now reading about the details it's very distantly jogging my memory. I'm sure I saw news coverage of it or like tabloid headlines about it, but I was 7 and did not know who Matthew Broderick was at that point, because I was too young to have seen or appreciated Ferris Bueller at that age.

I did know about the Laura Bush thing because in addition to it being covered during her husband's campaigns, I have a lot of family from Midland including people who went to school with Laura and George (he moved away after elementary and went to boarding school after that, so people don't really remember him well). Laura's accident was something almost everyone knew about because it was so tragic and it was not a big town. She ran a stop sign while driving at night and hit another car and the driver died. But the crazy thing is that she knew boy who died, who was also a teenager, and they'd actually dated previously. Most people I know who knew her thought was a very nice person despite that ordeal. People are pretty religious down there so I think that's sort of how the community got through it, including Laura.

Yes, I knew. I’m 66. Broderick and Grey are my contemporaries, only slightly younger.

Yep, I've known since the '90's. But I'm from NYC and this was talked about then.

He grew up in NYC. Kids who grow up in NYC tend to be terrible drivers IME.

I knew as I was a teen. However, it was not "all over the news" at all. And I believe he fled the scene / the country pretty quickly after it occurred.

Rebecca Gayheart also killled someone

Yes, but only because I read Jennifer Gray’s memoir and she was in the car with him. She was badly injured and he didn’t let her get checked out in the hospital because of his pride - she later developed back issues and when she went on dancing with the stars and got injured, a back surgeon said she’d essentially been walking around one tiny wrong move and she could be paralyzed for life. I believe she eventually had back surgery.

She did not paint him as a good person at all. He constantly cheated with her too. It makes me doubt that he stayed faithful to Sarah Jessica.

And her “accident” seemed more reckless given her impatience and actions behind the wheel.

He was very famous when this happened, and his agents protected him…because he was their cash cow.

Omg - this! The idea makes me sick.

We can never know people being killed by our actions. Directly, yes. But there are tons of people running the government who have killed probably millions at this point and they don't care. How is this different? One has remorse and one doesn't?

Yes, she went around several other cars who stopped and hit and killed a 9 year old boy crossing the street

Yeah he was driving on the wrong (right) side of the road and killed a mother and daughter

Didn’t know that. 30s.
