Huh? Socially it’s pretty similar to Dartmouth. The bar scene isn’t what it used to be, but there are still plenty of Greek events. |
If one were to include socializing in any way with at least one other person, outside of class, then all schools likely average 2-3xw or more, even the notoriously serious ivies, chicago, hopkins, CMU. If one only includes parties or clubs or bars as “going out “ then NOPE do not put Cornell Duke Northwestern and maybe others on this list. Those schools are basically ivies culturally , with more sports related campus focus for two of them |
I have a kid at Northwestern. A pretty social kid. Do you? Here's generally the last few months: Downtown (or Lincoln Park) 1x/week, club maybe 1/x week (if a frat has rented 1 of 3 spots out). Halloween was at a giant bar/club that has a location in Vegas. In Evanston 1x/week for off-campus parties. They also go out to eat a LOT (it can get pricey). It's definitely much more social than my kid expected. But DC is loving it (sometimes has to take a Sat night off bc did Thurs and Fri out and then basketball or football games, and it's too much given the frequency of mid-terms etc). I think the general problem with this post and people's feedback is that if you don't have a kid there (which is actually social), you don't have a good sense for what an average week looks like. Maybe that's another post. |
Is the nephew at NU in a house? Greek life? |
| UPenn with a lesser sports scene |
Agree. I have a kid at Cornell (in Greek life). But a large part of Cornell is not Greek. If you aren't in Greek life, I'd imagine you think it's a grinder school. |
|
ND has no Greek life and Sourh Bend is a dump.
But kids love hanging out in dorms (most have Greek-type charity events), watching sports and tailgates are so fun (though really just standing around in a cold parking lot). Kids seem happy but wouldn’t impress a kid who wants a more sophisticated scene. |

When two beers cost $25, there really aren't a lot of students going out multiple times a week.
It's not the 90s. It's very expensive to go out these days for students. |

At any top school, social life is bifurcated between the wealthy/Greek life and those not wealthy. From another post on here not so long ago, it starts long before kids walk onto campus - it starts with connections in private school. Walk around campus and take a look at the Golden Goose/Goyard/VCA/Cartier on the girls. Canada Goose & Moncler on everyone. Look at the cars kids are driving. A kid is driving a Lamborghini Urus at my kid's T10 (What!) So, if it's expensive to go out, it may impede your kid's social life. And maybe they'll think the school is antisocial or grind, but the reality is a lot is going on - it just costs a lot or involves different people that your kid isn't connected to. |
And don’t wander alone in the snow drunk! Some kids have perished passing out drunk in the snow overnight |
|
Gee. Call me crazy, but we looked at academics and best programs in kid’s intended major first.
As parents, we tried to select out drunk Greek fests…and we are big partiers ourselves. You can find your people anywhere. But- I’m not paying for a party… |
Don't they have security who patrol for this at night? |
Sure. But none of these kids earned that wealth. The kids with the unlimited cards are parasitical. I think everyone is trying to find the schools where students are smart and friendly. And that's it. And if some top ten schools are full of name brands and swanky cars and that's the scene - ugh, what a useless college experience for a human being. Expensive trash is still trash. |
