I'm not giving up hope for this guy being a successful and popular NYC mayor but holy cow what shockingly foolish things for a mayor-elect to say about their city in the time frame between being elected and being sworn-in. Recruiting by the NYPD is up so far in 2025, but it’s just keeping up with retirements. At 34,000 officers the NYPD is still understaffed by 5,000 officers. If a Mamdani Administration accelerates retirements and resignations, while depressing the recruiting rate, public safety will suffer and crime in NYC will rise rapidly.
