My dermatologist said that women are much more likely to stay on the oral version, because they end up getting sick of putting the serum/foam on their scalp twice a day. She just said "start with the pill" |
OP here. Really appreciate all of your input. I take my first dose of oral minoxidil tonight -- will report back when there is something to report back

| Hers is not a company I would ever buy from. They donate way too much to Trump. |

First, make sure you don't have a vitamin deficiency or other issues. A dermatologist will help you figure that out. Also, derm will look at your scalp to make sure you don't have scarring.
I had hair loss and after a blood test realized I had low iron. I'm also perimenopausal. I now take iron supplements and on hormones but the biggest help was from minoxidil. 5% minoxidil from costco. Don't waste your money on hair supplements. |
| Go to an actual dermatologist. Ask for a scalp biopsy. Determine the cause, that will get you the correct solution. |

OP back with an update as updates were helpful when I was deciding what path to take.
Have been on oral monoxidil for 11 weeks. I take a generic which costs $2/month. Hair loss: The volume of hair I have lost has decreased so dramatically. Before, I would pull hair from my shower drain catch after each shampoo and de-shed my brush daily. Now I have maybe 8-10 hairs shed while I am drying my hair. New hair growth: Nothing noticeable on my head though my doctor said it would take 6 months or more most likely to notice regrowth. Other hair growth: Definitely have more chin hairs to pluck and I use a tiny razor for fuzz on upper lip. My eyebrows seem to be growing faster too, have to get them waxed every three weeks now instead of four. Lashes also seem to be growing which has been a pleasant surprise. I have not had hair growth on other parts of my body than face. Side effects: surprisingly none. I was prepping for the "dread shred" but either it happened when I was still losing a lot of hair after I started or did not happen. No weight gain. No dizziness. No fluid retention. Other notes: I saw my GP who checked my scalp and did an echocardiogram a few weeks after I started the meds. I also had blood draws to check levels and labs are all good so no underlying condition causing the hair loss. Just good old female pattern baldness, stress and being middle aged. Yay. I did not want to take the topical OTC or Rx because I have had dry scalp in the past and did not want to exacerbate it and I also have a cat who sleeps with me (topical is toxic to cats). Also, my issue was thinning kind of all over; no bald spots or hairline receding or issues that may be more difficult to mask. I am hopeful there is some regrowth for volume but even if there is zero and this pill just helps me from the massive hair loss I was experiencing all summer and fall, it will be worth it. |
| I understand that if stop taking oral minoxidil, my hair will start falling out again. So…. I don’t stop taking oral minoxidil. |
Thanks for the update! |

Just a PSA- monoxidil is very, very toxic (fatal) to cats and also toxic to dogs. Using a topical product like Rogaine puts pets at risk even through secondhand contact like from a pillowcase.
Using oral monoxidil like OP should keep your fur babies safe

Has anyone tried this FDA approved red light helmet? https://getwellue.com/products/laser-hair-growth-helmet?currency=USD&variant=43943633748010&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=1fd55fc037a6
am curious... |
Be patient. It was probably 3 months before I saw new baby hairs (and they stick straight up for a few months so get some hairspray to keep them down). I’m about a year in now and my results have been real. Random coworkers have commented. |
Did you grow excess hair anywhere else? That’s my worry about the oral. |
Disregard, I just read the update. |
| Thanks for the update, OP! I didn’t realize weight gain/dizziness were potential side effects. I filled my prescription but have not started yet. |
Minoxidil was designed to treated high blood pressure. It became a treatment for hair loss when doctors started noticing this side effect on patients. If you already have low blood pressure, the Minoxidil could lower it more resulting in dizziness. |
