Try using the Hotel Tonight app or website. If you're booking really last minute you can get great discounts (same-day or next day).

Staying "close to the train station" would not be a priority for me in NYC

That area has gotten a lot nicer in the paat few years, also, with the construction of the new train hall.

I'd rather stay on the west side than Battery Park City.

My best friend and I did a girls weekend recently and stayed at Motto Chelsea. It was well priced. It was hard to find a place with double beds at the last minute and this was one of only affordable places with doubles that I could find. The rooms are small but well organized. There is a destination fee (all the NYC hotels have them) but you can use part of it for the coffee bar downstairs. This was one of the quietest places I have ever stayed!!!!!

I also stayed at the Cambria in Chelsea (someone mentioned it above in the thread). I liked the location and it was also on the quieter side. Affordable. It's not as nice at the Chelsea motto but fine. The staff was very friendly.

My younger daughter and I are going to NYC around Christmas time and I booked Pod 39 (cheaper if you book directly) and it seems to be well priced and well located with decent reviews.

We enjoyed the Michaelangelo with two teens. Their big rooms are really BIG (two kind beds, walk-in closet, large dressing area).
We also have enjoyed Margaritaville - the rooms were super bright, clean but tiny. We booked a room for us and a room for the kids.
Both near but not totally in the crazy of Times Square.
Years ago we stayed in a Pod Hotel - I think Pod 51. Very modern, clean, fun but basic. I think each has a cool bar/lounge associated with it too.

I'm the PP above. Just wanted to add that I have also stayed at Margaritaville and it's nice. Small room but comfortable double beds. The rooms are very clean and feel like quality materials were used. Bathroom is nice with good shower pressure. In the summer, they have a nice pool. We ate at the restaurant there out of convenience one night. Not the best food but not the worst. There is a 1.50 pizza joint right next store and my DD loved it.

15-year old DD and I stayed at Pod Times Square a few weeks ago for a girls trip, and it was great. We had a tiny room with bunk beds (DD on top) but we were barely there.

(Sidenote: One of the best parts was that each bunk had a TV that ONLY got the Hallmark Movie Channel, and we stayed up half the night together watching and laughing at the ridiculous storylines. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.)

I always stay at The Empire because it is great for the money, and right across from Lincoln Center.

Michaelangelo is $600+ a night.

OP. I booked the Fifty Sonesta in Midtown East. It averaged out to $475 with taxes. Two queens and a decent sized room. Not huge but not a closet.

This was for 2 double beds in each room. Not the fanciest hotel, but decent location and price.

Funny, I just stayed there a few days ago.
Good central location, quiet clean room, and decent breakfast. Good pick.

We stayed at the Empire over the holidays last year. It was not fancy but the location was great.
