The Great Math Race

The higher the academic barrier to entry for a sought after opportunity, the more the playing field is leveled for my kids.

So, the Great Math Race is the only chance of equality and equity for my kids because they are being judged on their hard-work, intelligence and mastery.

Math is not everything. It’s definitely an Asian American obsession.

Honestly now that I have a kid in college, I am not sure it was worth it. Repeating calculus as a freshman and the class is harder than in HS (advanced calculus).

In my view, focusing on statistics is likely more useful today than the advanced tracks if not pursuing computer science or engineering.

It sounds like you pushed your kid to be accelerated in math when your child simply wasn't cut out for it. I know a married couple who both have math/cs degrees. They pushed all of their kids to excel and accelerate in math, and all but the youngest were up to it. Unfortunately the youngest just wasn't a math genius like the rest of the family but he was pushed into the accelerated tracks anyway. HS was very hard for him compared to kids whose parents didn't push as much. He works in theater now.

Yes, Math is not everything. It is one of the things though. Look where China is in AI, EV, solar power, infrasturcture, weapon systems, manufacturing, space race, rare earth mining! All because of a strong Math background.

So, my kids excel in Math, other subjects, ECs, solo sports, scholastic events, volunteer work etc. But, because they also excel in Math, they are able to take advantage of opportunities and outcompete others.

Sure, there’s that cultural emphasis on math but there’s another more fundamental explanation for their advances as a totalitarian state: the great hack:

Not really, more immigrant not just Asian. I'm Asian-American and I'm the lone US born mom at enrichment. All the other moms and dads are from a variety of backgrounds but all immigrant - India, Russia, Ukraine, China, Mongolia.

And also recognize that the US system really is not great at teaching math. We are way behind. I'm in a top-rated public district and our 3rd graders have started the year with single digit and single+double digit addition. THIRD grade.

What I can't understand is why is that? The US had the best textbooks for Math IMO. I have bought and sent so many 2nd hand Math textbooks of all levels to my country of origin for my family members because these books are treasures. But, now the schools themselves are not using textbooks at all. Why did US did this about-turn?

My kids were in MCPS when MCPS had a great reputation. Even then, I was basically tutoring my kids by myself in all the subjects at home, using Teacher Edition math books. The level of disorganization in education in US is mind boggling.

His roommate chose to slum it out despite already knowing the material to get an easy A. He could have also chosen to continue with more advanced math. Your son could do neither.

Those are some big assumptions you made there. Actually his engineering program required everyone to start with the engineering calculus they took. Probably because they needed to be sure everyone knew that foundation regardless of how and when they had been accelerated.

Not due to math. Listed items are due to systematic nation-sponsored theft of intellectual property.

Awwww...but White colonialism stole wealth, land, people, independence, self-determination from the new world, Asia and Africa so it is the correct quid pro quo.

Who your dad's golf buddies are is also hugely important in America, but that is a milleu immigrants are excluded from. Hence, they try to compete on merit. Maybe their grandkids will have the connections and capital to follow their passions without worrying too much about their ability to find a job.

Last I knew, the US did not colonize China. We can make an argument about "spheres of influence," but I hope you would not lump all whites together in such a racist fashion. Not to mention China's Neo-imperialism: Belt and Road; Nine Dash Line.

China does not have a lead in any of those areas. They are merely a "fast follower". Their economy peaked in 2023 (as reported by The Economist) and now is in terminal decline. They will get old before they get rich, thanks to their demographic cliff, and this is clobbering their economy.
