High School Catfish on Netflix

I think spoiler wanted Owen for herself and was jealous of Lauryn. Spoiler is a psychopath.

Didn't I hear perpetrator say that they did no send the initial text messages? If I heard that correctly, was it ever determined who sent those initial text messages?

The FBI guy basically said that was a lie by the perpetrator, that perpetrators often try to "deflect" and that is a classic example.

Also as OP and others noted - zero surprise from Lauryn. Because she knew all along. 100% just like the mother of the Halloween party girl called it.

I think they don't actually know for sure about the very first texts. The article suggests she might not be lying and it's plausible those texts gave her the idea. The first texts were very limited in number (like 3-4) and a YEAR before the others started, so if they were from spoiler, she then showed self-control for a long time in between. All of which is to say that my impression is that the question is unsettled.

No.

Perpetrator was keeping lots of secrets. Job loss for a LONG time and her cousin suggested that she kept some insurance money from a claim. That made sense to me because it sounded like she was out of work for years. She'd have to have some money for her husband not to notice even if she controlled it all. Maybe she did other criminal acts. She was obviously a liar and delusional.

She also went after the boy's new girlfriend so she had some attachment or obsession with him. She was probably wanting to live out a fantasy teenage life that she missed at that age or something.

The principal annoyed me to no end. Like, let's do nothing, we've already tried nothing. He did not want to be bothered.

What about all the bottles of alcohol on the dining room table during the reveal? I thought of three things: no one sits together; their family closeness is not real; she's an alcoholic; she's saving bottles for the cash value, another sign of being out of work and needing any cash.

I felt bad for the people who were wrongly accused.

Did Lauryn and Spoiler sit in same room for Netflix? Are they talking?

Even if Lauryn figured out who the perpetrator was before they were arrested, I’m sure she was in denial and survival mode. She was so young and the texts were so graphic her mind may have been trying to protect her. She was and still is a child.

I do not believe for one second Lauryn was in on it.

There was a body camera video from during the investigation. I guess you never know how you would react in those situations, but nobody's reaction on that bodycam video was what I would expect. Too calm, maybe? Like, even if they didn't know that this specific trouble was coming at this time; they knew something was coming.

In the bodcam reveal, I found the officer's explanation to Lauryn truly bizarre. He never explicitly said, "Spoiler is responsible for the text messages." He tiptoed around an explanation, saying, "Spoiler has had some financial difficulties and has made some mistakes," but didn't mention the texting harassment. No wonder Lauryn didn't react. Then Spoiler's spouse comes in and says, "When did you lose your job?" Again, not addressing the more obvious crime/betrayal to Lauryn. I feel so bad for that kid.

I noticed that too. My heart breaks for Lauryn. She has so much to process and come to terms with. I really hope she can work through all of it with an appropriate mental health professional. From the reveal, it seems like she keeps a lot bottled up inside.

I think the officer was acting sympathetic so she would let her guard down and talk and it worked. She admitted it right then and there.

It took me 3 attempts to get through this documentary. The story is bonkers but the actual production was lackluster.

Lauryn needs real therapy and a restraining order (including digital) against Spoiler.

Spoiler needs to be UNDER the jail, as my grandmother would say, and needs to be restricted from devices. Land lines only! She’s dangerous.

Text book Stockholm syndrome. This should be played in psychology classes.

I think spoiler has a restraining order against Lauryn so they wouldn't be allowed in the same room.

Was the dad in the doc? What does he have to say?

(Were the parents married?)

Responding to my own post to say people.com has an article on this on the main page right now if we don't want to put spoilers here

I don’t think Lauryn knew or was in on anything. I think she was dissociating in that moment and not fully understanding what was being said (partly because the cop said it in a roundabout way). The fact that the cops not only allowed her stalker to be there in the room when they told her, but also allowed her stalker to touch her was infuriating.
