High School Catfish on Netflix

I called it from the synopsis.

I dated a guy in high school who had a similar relationship with spoiler alert. I'd get nasty letters in the USPS trying to manipulate me with lies because that's all spoiler alert had access to at the time.

Didn't I hear perpetrator say that they did no send the initial text messages? If I heard that correctly, was it ever determined who sent those initial text messages?

The FBI guy basically said that was a lie by the perpetrator, that perpetrators often try to "deflect" and that is a classic example.

Also as OP and others noted - zero surprise from Lauryn. Because she knew all along. 100% just like the mother of the Halloween party girl called it.

If anyone wants to do a deeper dive on this story, the article gives more background. Spoiler in the URL!!!

I think they don't actually know for sure about the very first texts. The article suggests she might not be lying and it's plausible those texts gave her the idea. The first texts were very limited in number (like 3-4) and a YEAR before the others started, so if they were from spoiler, she then showed self-control for a long time in between. All of which is to say that my impression is that the question is unsettled.

Based on Lauren’s immediate reaction and her professing love for the perpetrator later, she either knew all along or she is VERY severely damaged and is starting to detach from reality

As I said on Page 1, I think she's a sweet yet simple girl. Her mother manipulated her SO much that she doesn't know the truth, but all she knows is that her mother consistently told her she loved her, etc. It didn't seem like Lauryn had many friends at all. Her mom may have been her only friend.

Subpoenaed IP addresses from the phone company. Then went and talked to the suspected perpetrator who confessed.

The dad's reaction gave me the impression that a lot of things were going wrong prior to this. Like this was the tip of a very f**ked up iceberg.

I don't think she knew all along. I think she realized at some point when she was too far gone.

I don't think she realized - not smart enough. And she could never come to a conclusion on her own. The only person she'd have felt she could talk to about it was .... her mom. And feeling so isolated and attacked I doubt she'd risk hurting her mom's feelings by asking if it was her, you know?

The article quoted someone saying Lauryn thought it might be xxx a month before it came out. The article also says a lot of people in town had the same idea. So why it took 2 years for it to be revealed is crazy.
