Do some of you parents with older teens truly believe they’re not on TikTok?

Where do you work?

What industry?

I think you’re probably wrong and that you’d only have an issue if it was your phone, but who knows

Probably true

I don't restrict TikTok. If they want, they can have it. But they say it's for kids.

So you’ve never been on tik tok?

Separately, I don't get your attitude, OP. Some teens aren't into social media, some don't vape, some don't do weed, some don't drink, some don't do drugs, some don't have sex, etc. Statistically, those circles will overlap and it's perfectly possible to get a kid who doesn't do any of those things. Maybe it's your kid, maybe it's not. But gloating that parents are blind to their children's behavior is weird.

Social media does not equal drugs. It is a communication channel and whether you like it or not, part of the modern world that your kids will need to navigate in order to be successful. Sorry, it’s true.

PP you replied to. And? You think I'm forcing a 20 year old? It's his choice. Neither my husband nor I are on social media, as in, we do not use personal accounts on FB, Insta or TikTok. It's a choice. And yet somehow we're functional human beings with friends! We use the internet, are on Youtube and DCUM, etc. But I prefer keeping in touch with friends without FB, which I used to have and very much dislike. I do not WANT a social media presence. A social media presence should not be a hiring requirement, for instance, unless one hires for PR or communication. We're scientists. We couldn't care less.

Who said anything about forcing? It’s the parents who are ‘banning’ it that are the issue. Did you not see the Snapchat thread?

They think it’s cringy. They’re pretty anti-social media.

My 19 year old son is not. He’s on Instagram but not TikTok, His sister is on TikTok, son has no reason to lie about it as I haven’t forbidden it and he’s away in college and can do what he wants.

I’ve never been on tiktok, but of course my kids are on it.

Eh, my kids have been boom and bust on TikTok. They used it a lot for a while then gave it up on their own bc they felt like it was eating too much of their time and brain space. They’ve been off it for a while now, will probably go back on at some point.

Insta, snap, discord, what’s app, etc.. are all worse.

Are you really this stupid. Too Tok is horrible. Encourages suicide, eating disorders and cutting.

Literal mom. Really the point of the post was not if your particular older teen uses or doesn't use Tik Tok regularly, but rather commenting about the parents from the other thread on Snap about 'banning' social media for their older teens. I would hope you wouldn't know what social media your son is using or not using by his age. On that snap thread, even people who would allow *some" snapchat for their *older* teens seemed to say BUT NOT TIK TOK, NEVER TIK TOK, OMG NOT TIK TOK!!!

This is just ridiculous, and in most cases, their kids are likely using it. Young adults should know how to navigate social media, and should not be 'banned' by their parents from engaging with the world in the communication channels that are used today. And of course its the height of irony that the parents are on here themselves...

No

And not because I'm anti anything

Youtube fits my needs better. Usually the videos I watch are 20 min or longer. There are Youtube shorts if I really must see something, though delayed i know.

I don’t have an account but I’ve seen a bunch, and there’s actually some pretty good stuff out there — sometimes funny, sometimes creative, sometimes whip smart. Give people a tool, and many figure out ways to use it really creatively. (And some use it in ways that suck, too)

My older teen is not banned from being on TikTok, and yet they have no interest in creating content. They prefer to browse videos.
