The one vehicle I’ve seen everywhere .. rich, poor, and in the middle ..everyone seems to have one

Nope - I knew immediately which car the post was about. People love it because it has 3 real rows without being as ungainly as a Suburban or tacky like an Escalade. Tellurides were on some insane backorder list a couple years ago because there aren’t other cars like it. Wealthy families have one for the nanny or for carpools, they aren’t looking for longevity and don’t care about the brand being low end.

Nobody with real money has a Kia, even for the nanny. It's a LMC and UMC striver car like the XC90 was a few years ago.

Drive through wealthy neighborhoods and it's either Honda/Toyota/Lexus if they don't care about cars, or something mid/high tier German or British if they do. Or possibly a GM big body if they have a large family.

Lol she isn’t wrong though.

Kia means gear in Korean

It’s been a while but that car, known as “the expensive tall Camry” in my house, was seriously EVERYWHERE for years.

It’s because they were the only thing available during Covid

Got one as a rental car on vacation and it was great.

I was going to post this. KIA was the only car you could get during Covid, as they are manufactured in Alabama.

So people like us bought them, and it turns out they are surprisingly good cars, so friends and neighbors who I saw our Telluride/rode in it ended up buying them too.

You’re aware that there are many other cars manufactured in America besides this Kia, right?

They’re manufactured in GA. Hyundai and Honda are in AL. I’d think those would be available too. Seems like the Telluride had something else going for it.

But you'd be better off buying what it's a knock off of: A hybrid Honda CRV.

It’s much bigger than a CRV. It’s probably bigger than a pilot. I’ve been in one. It’s nice, but I wouldn’t expect it to last that long.

Ours is a 2016 sorrento (precursor to Telluride) and we've had zero problems. I want to upgrade to a subaru, but DH loves his Kia. We also have a bueatiful expensive home (~$5M) and can afford any car, like PP mentioned, so I'm sure people wonder. Truth is we just need a reliable functional 3 rowed vehicle - and we're not car people.

Also KIAs are not very reliable.

Not true anymore.

Well, it's at 150K miles, and it's solidly going strong. Definitely not a low-end car.

+1

I thought you were going to say Tesla, which is truly ubiquitous! The Kia is not common.

It's a great car, but it's a cheap Honda knockoff. We seriously debated getting one before getting our Pilot—but decided Kia's track record of quality wasn't as good as Honda's and that's why there's a price difference.

Wrong. Their perceived track record isn't as good. Honda is junk now too like everything else.

Well, we have a Honda and a Kia and I would disagree strongly. Our Honda is 8 years older than our Kia and requires significantly less work and maintenance. We bought the Kia when their safety and quality ratings were sky high and my personal experience has been BAD - it required serious engine repairs early on and just isn't a great car. We're going back to Hondas and Toyotas.

We have the Hyundai twin, the Palisade. It's fantastic. Not super expensive, roomy, drives well, reliable, plenty of quasi-luxury features. And it looks good, too. Highly recommended.
