Every year after SOL someone post this question. I think it’s great the kids get to destress and finally have fun at school. It’s a great way to celebrate the year. |
My kid has a quiz in English today and is studying for 2 finals. He turned in some homework for History. I think they have fun in the last week of school, probably the last 2 1/2 days of the year. |
mine are just doing projects so be an easy A |
mine have projects do, they are working on them in class so its an easy grade. |
+1 All 7 years of elementary school became no work after the SOL |
3rd grade - they took both I-Ready tests (sigh) this week. They are working on spelling and doing some more math review. I think they’re starting long division and multiplication, but probably won’t get too far in it given the holiday weekend coming up. I think they might have one more benchmark test as well at some point. There will also be a spelling bee, field day, and an end of the year party the last week of school. It does feel like running out the clock a bit … |
My 6th grader and 9th grader are both still doing real work and it looks like they will be until the last few days of school. |
6th grader is working on data/circle graphs in math. |
Elementary. Just filling time. Movies. Field day. End of year party. POGPOL nonsense. Short films. Cartoons. Magic school bus. Games. No lectures. Checked out. |
Ok, well that’s your teacher and not all elementary schools. |
Spelling bee? Our was done earlier in the year. Which school if I may ask? |
Not our experience. Were there more fun events? Yes. But my kids were still learning. They watch one movie on the afternoon of field day. They did fun projects, wrapped up units they were still working on, and fit in some extras they didn’t have a ton of time for during the year. They also did some presentations for parents, etc. if your child did nothing, you should have spoken to the principal. |
Sorry your school experience sucks. Not our experience at all. Our kid finished SOLs and is still learning. |
It sounds like it’s just a 3rd grade thing. I’m not sure if the other grades are doing their own. Newington Forest in Springfield. |
+1 We experienced similar for all ES years after the SOLs, little was taught. Lots of movies occurred across the Specials and classrooms. After awhile, the teachers were told they could only play shorter 30 minute films so no one could call it ‘movies’ anymore. But, they would play the 30 min films back to back anyway. There was a remarkable drop off in instruction after the SOL. |
