I’m trying to stay anonymous. It’s one of Colby, Bates, Bowdoin.

No one will know who you are. For chrisakes.

OP -- just tell your daughter that any well- educated person will have heard of all of these schools. It's that simple.

This is a good time for her to practice an important skill: not caring what others think.

She’ll be much happier in life if she just chooses to ignore the race for prestige. The only people who care are the others in that race. Most of us are happy to be supportive and kind, and we don’t care where you’re going to college. Just yay for you!

I used to live in a town of 4000 in Michigan. A very smart teacher there sent his kid to one of those 3 schools, & many people were puzzled. But there were other people in town who had gone to Williams & Smith, so it wasn’t the first time anyone there had done something for college that the uninformed didn’t understand. It’s just goes with the territory.

I don’t see how this is a problem - unless you let it be one. How wonderful that your DD is going to attend an excellent school in a different part of the country? No need to explain the why behind her choice. Best of luck to her!

That’s perfect. She will ditch her small southern town and be living in the sophisticated city why her hs friends never leave that south. It’s ok. It’s her choice. Who cares what they think?

You lost me with “sophisticated city.” Unless you mean after college, when everyone moves to Boston and, in the case of Bowdoin, New York…

Please don’t say which of the 3 schools. This former teacher needs to remain anonymous!

Say, "it's very well known in the Northeast."

Do people have trouble pronouncing it?

If not, does it make one think of cheese?

Or a motel?

I was thinking of going a little R-Rated with that one. Glad I didn’t.

Most people are not looking at very selective colleges and so they don't know them. That's fine. I went from a small Southern town to the University of Chicago and I had one teacher who ever heard of it. That didn't make it a bad fit or a bad choice.

Yes, that will go over well in Dixie.

I actually don’t agree with this. Any well-educated person from the northeast will have, but the farther you get from there, the expectation is that they have only heard of one of them, maybe two…

Why not just really roll the dice & say, “Chuck Schumer thinks highly of it.”

This is a great way to help her develop a confident elevator pitch of sorts. "I'm going to Snazzbush. It's a small liberal arts college in Vermont. I'll be majoring in Journalism, but they also have a great Business program that feeds to a lot firms businesses in NYC, so I might minor in Business."

She’s lucky to be able to escape up north given the state of our country. Those are great schools. Congrats, op!
