No one has heard of DDs college

Anonymous
DD will be heading to a LAC in the northeast this fall. We are from the south, so none of our acquaintances have heard of it. This does not bother me, but DD has been a little down over it. What can I say to cheer her up?

She doesn’t care about prestige, but I think she’s just tired of having to justify her choice to everyone.

Name thr college or this is meaningless.

Remind yourself that apart from a tiny handful of options, she'd have had to justify her choice anyway. It's the same everywhere.

We have not heard of the (un-named) SLAC either. So in that limited sense, everyone is correct.

She picked it because she felt it was the right college for her. I don’t understand justifying it to anyone but her parents who are most likely paying for it.

An, now we know the name!

Help her come up with one sentence to explain (not justify -- no reason to be defensive). "I'm going to LAC XYZ in [state] in the fall. I'm so excited because it has [whatever she likes about the school]."

1. Name it or we can't help you.
2. Odds are it is better than Ole Miss or Auburn or Valdosta State or wherever the heck these know-it-alls went. Just ignore them.
3. She should have thought of this before deciding to go to a LAC. It is part of what you sign up for.

My son went to a little known college. I just said it was a small school in upstate NY and he was loving it. Situation was made worse by a sibling at Yale.

I bet you 100 DCUM points that I have heard of it.

Where in the South? I’m guessing outside Atlanta-Charlotte-Dallas-southern FL-Houston-Research Triangle. Even smaller Southern cities like Charleston have enough people to support local Northeastern SLAC alumni groups.

You cannot have heard of that which is undefined: in DCUM-land, it does not exist yet.

It’s all the hype now in chatter, but will all blow over soon and won’t be a constant topic. She’ll be happy and thriving in her college of choice. Most people know very little, even educated ones, it’s a low bar.

What's there to say? She chose it and should embrace it.

Or is this one of those posts where you insist that no one outside of the northeast has heard of Williams or Amherst?

I’m trying to stay anonymous. It’s one of Colby, Bates, Bowdoin.
