No one has heard of DDs college

How about, “Now that the southern colleges can’t seem to win a college football championship, I figured I’d go up north where men aren’t losers.” That should do the trick. You’re welcome.

I’m trying to stay anonymous. It’s one of Colby, Bates, Bowdoin.

OK, we have all heard of it: they are all great schools. Tell DC she done good, to stick to her guns (you can do that in Maine, believe me), and that your acquaintances are lame.

People who haven't heard of those schools are...how do I say this without sounding snobby?...not very in the know when it comes to which colleges are good. I would explain to DD that it's a very good school but it's better to be modest about it because a lot of people come from backgrounds where they cannot afford to go to those schools so it's not on their radar screen.

LOL. I really don't think you're likely to out your child as one of 500 entering freshman. Anyway, those schools are all fairly well known. I thought you were going to say something way, way more obscure.

Agree 100%. She should be proud - all are incredible schools (though I'm sure there are plenty of people here ready to insult them all). But best to stay humble as she isn't going to change them. If they were smart and open-minded, they would say "hmm, she's a smart girl, that must be a pretty good school. Perhaps I should learn more about it." Rather than "stupid girl turned down Bama sorority rush for some small place in Maine? Moron."

Do people have trouble pronouncing it?

If not, does it make one think of cheese?

Between those three schools, how many females from the south are there? Probably not a ton. Then localize it to one of the schools? Very, very few. I think that saying the three schools was the perfect solution and we now can give appropriate responses as we get the point and the answer is the same regardless of which of the three it is.

I’ve never heard of Bates, I’m aware of Colby but no one ever talks about it IRL, and I’ve only ever seen Bowdoin mentioned on this board.

LOL. If they haven't heard of it consider what it says about them.

That’s perfect. She will ditch her small southern town and be living in the sophisticated city why her hs friends never leave that south. It’s ok. It’s her choice. Who cares what they think?
