Bermuda is not that expensive. Flights are cheap right now because no one is coming to visit the USA. She may have some savings, and she wanted to give her parents a nice, memorable gift. She probably put it on her credit card.

My DS travels all the time on a similar salary. He lives in a shared apartment and has no car. He loves to travel and spends his money on that. It's possible on $70k salary if your expenses are low.
