Shout out to the tech crews bc the sets are just incredible. I want to get to more FCPS schools to check out their shows next weekend if there are any still going on--it is a bummer they are all out mostly at the same weekend or two.

I haven't been to an Oakton musical in the last couple years, but they traditionally had professional-level musicals with unbelievable talent, outstanding costumes, and outstanding tech. They staged Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Titanic, Addams Family, Mary Poppins, and a series of other shows that were often better than the shows I saw at Signature and Arena. When they staged Catch Me if You Can, they had the real Frank Abignale go to the show! That's impressive.

A few years ago, I saw that Oakton was doing Les Miserables. I have listened to the soundtrack so many times that every note is etched into my memory. When I saw the sign at OHS, I thought --- oh... that is a big show for a high school to put on... it's probably not going to be very good acting, but at least I can sit and enjoy the pit orchestra playing the songs I know and love. So, DH and I went. It was SO good, I got a ticket to come back the next night by myself! Yes, I sat through the three hour epic journey twice in one weekend! I even wrote a letter to their drama dept saying how good it was.

We are going to Into the Woods next weekend. I've never seen that musical, but I'm glad it was good.

I've been to other high schools' musicals, and they were more on the cringey side. If you find a good one --- it REALLY is a bargain!

It’s your post that’s on the cringey side. Oakton student theatre is on par with the excellent programs at many other high schools.

Just stop.

This is a wonderful, positive thread about one of the strongest programs in FCPS, the high school theater program.

If you want to troll, go back to politics or the many other negative threads.

PP decided to claim Oakton’s program was on a different level by calling other schools’ productions “cringey.” STFU.

Are you actually arguing that NO other high school musicals in FCPS have EVER been cringey? That's nuts. They are high schools! They are limited in the pool of people who are interested in performing in any given year. And YES, I have sat through several CRINGEY performances -- that I wanted to get up and leave. But, hey -- they are high school students trying to do their best. That is the reality of it -- people don't expect high school shows to be professional level or even college level (and yes, I've been to a few college level shows that were painful.) But, OHS's performance blew me away! (And no, my kids don't/didn't go to OHS... in fact, they went/go to a nearby HS )

You’re very rude and injecting unpleasantness into a previously positive thread.

Thanks for supporting our FX Players! The kids worked so hard and the set was incredible. It was very sad to take it down yesterday.

We saw Little Shop of Horrors at Annandale this weekend thoroughly enjoyed it! It's so nice to see so many programs rebounding after the hit performing arts took during Covid.

Fairfax HS has a great drama/arts department!

We have an incredible theatre program divisionwide. All the parents wringing their hands about Fairfax and South Lakes especially should take note.

God, just stop. Those kids work their butts off and do phenomenal work and are accepted to top college theatre programs.

+1. PP seems not to have realized that, when you find yourself in a hole, the best way forward is to stop digging.

We saw Footloose at Herndon high school this past weekend and it was phenomenal!

No they don’t, that account is absolutely terrible. You need to go to the FCPS website and they list every show there.

Yes - these productions are AWESOME!!! I love taking my kids to see them. We went to one a few summers ago and Hayfield on a whim and were blown away.

Thank you for this post.

We saw Mamma Mia at Woodson last weekend (it is running this coming weekend as well), total blast! Really fun music, of course, and great sets.

I need to check out the other HS productions as well- are the musicals always in May?
Anonymous
Yes, it’s really unfortunate that all the spring musicals are in the same two weekends. There’s just too many shows and not enough nights to see them all! I really wish some of the schools would do fall musicals. But it seems every high school does a fall play and spring musical.

A few years ago some friends and I got the idea to have a theater night that didn't involve spending a fortune or schlepping to DC--we dressed up, went out for drinks, saw a show at the local high school, and then went for a late dinner. It was so fun we've done it every year since. We pick a different high school each spring and we've never been disappointed.
