FCPS theatre--WOW! Highly recommend if you are looking for something to do!

In the past two weekends I have seen Hadestown at Fairfax HS and Into the Woods at Oakton HS--can I just say, these are some of the best show you will see for 15 dollars! Shout out to the tech crews bc the sets are just incredible. I want to get to more FCPS schools to check out their shows next weekend if there are any still going on--it is a bummer they are all out mostly at the same weekend or two.

West Springfield High School is also doing Into the Woods next week, Thursday through Saturday. It is not on the Cappies spring musical list above, because WSHS did a play last fall for their Cappies entry, instead of a musical like they usually do.

^^^ One more note. The times copied above are specifically for the actual Cappies performance where the judges will attend. All of these schools will do a Thursday, Friday and Saturday performance, plus a matinee on either Saturday or Sunday.

Most of the schools will have a live pit orchestra too for their musicals.

Amelie at McLean is this weekend - tonight at 7 and tomorrow at 2 are left. It was great!

You can see all FCPS shows on their fine and performing arts calendar: https://www.fcps.edu/events?f%5B0%5D=event_calendar%3A259.

What a great thread!

I think high school theatre around here is up to good community theatre standards. Bishop Ireton has a good program also (though the spring musical was back in April, so you’ll have to wait until the fall).

This really seems like an ad.

An ad for public high school theatre? That’s an odd reaction.

High school theater in the DMV is excellent, and cheap entertainment for folks looking for date night ideas.

Thanks for sharing this! If anyone is associated with Falls Church production and can tell me if the 2pm next weekend is sold out, I would appreciate it.

I haven't been to an Oakton musical in the last couple years, but they traditionally had professional-level musicals with unbelievable talent, outstanding costumes, and outstanding tech. They staged Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Titanic, Addams Family, Mary Poppins, and a series of other shows that were often better than the shows I saw at Signature and Arena. When they staged Catch Me if You Can, they had the real Frank Abignale go to the show! That's impressive.

Last year, West Springfield performed Sweeney Todd. It was amazing, a very professional performance. The ensemble and pit were incredible, and the 6 primary leads spectacular, especially the kid who played Sweeney. The tech was unbelievable too. They created 2 story set that moved around stage and rotated, with a trap door and working chute to the basement. They won a ton of awards last year. Most of those performers graduated last spring. We are looking forward to seeing what the rising performers do with Into the Woods next weekend.

If you haven't seen one of the FCPS high school productions, particularly the musicals, you are missing out.
