Leave it to her. Explain it then let her decide. If she's not sexually active with intercourse, she could wait till college or later. |
The older you wait, they have to do 3 shots instead of 2. We did them but spaced it out more (the two). I was worried but it ended up being fine. I think there was a fever for a half a day and tired for a day but that was it. |
| Do it asap before she starts hooking up. |
+1 |
| It depends on when she plans to become sexually active OP. |

You just need one. Most reactions occur after 2 or 3, so I’d def only do one for a girl with auto immune. Most with auto immune histories are overreacters immune system wise so one shot is more than enough immune stimulation for protection.
My daughter got one at 17. I actually hadn’t planned on it and she went to a doctor appt on her own and ended up getting it. I ended up doing research after that and now I’m going to do the same for her sister. It’s less age and more getting the shot before they are sexually active. My child was not a virgin but her first was with another virgin so I’m hoping it’s ok |
| I wouldn’t delay any vaccines past July. They may not be available or affordable in the fall. |
You can still get it up to age 45! Granted, you may have already been exposed to some strains, but if you’ve never had a postive pap screening, you may gain some benefit. And even if you have been exposed, it won’t hurt to get the vaccine and may cover strains you haven’t been exposed to |

Exercise caution when giving HPV vaccine to anyone with a family history of autoimmune disease. There is a researcher at University at Buffalo who has written extensively about the development of POTS, autonomic dysfunction, and autoimmune disease following HPV vaccination.
Also - https://www.ajmc.com/view/new-report-highlights-rare-cases-of-sle-onset-after-hpv-vaccination For those of us with a family history, we can be free riders on others' vaccination status and take normal precautions like getting routine Pap smears. |
With today’s teens, they are extremely um, well informed, about pregnancy and sex at much much earlier ages. They have all seen clips from Teen Mom. And they have all been exposed to porn; on a friends phone if not there own. So for most the “intercourse” part comes later, but they first engage in oral or anal; often unprotected because they know they can’t get pregnant that way. It’s the most common first step and many times, they aren’t even dating the other person (I know, weird to our generation. But that’s how it is now). HPV can sometimes be transmitted through oral. I would have her vaccinated asap. It will protect her. |
| Many anal and throat cancers and HPV are related. |
|
For those who say to wait.
Sexually active doesn't just mean PIV. Even rubbing oneself on the other can transmit the virus. It's not just via penetration. |
Unfortunately, the ACIP meeting where changes to vaccine schedules are made and where this was going to be discussed was cancelled . Thanks RFK.

Or, oral. Make sure she know that anything involving a penis is off the table until she gets the HPV shot. A friend of mine died from throat cancer pre HPV vaccine availability. It's how she found out here dh had cheated on her. I would delay until college or as long as you can trust dd to tell you the truth about her sex life. There is unfortunately always the possibility of r*people as well. |

DD just has her 14 year old physical and doc tried convincing her to take the HPV with the logic of “take it now and you only have to get 2 shots, if you wait you’ll have to get 3.” I pointed out the new evidence that 1 dose is just as protective and showed her the article and it surprised the *hit out of the doctor. She backed down on insisting my daughter take it and acknowledge that this information had not trickled down to her yet. Doctors are not gods and they don’t know everything. Things that are important to your family, you have to research on your own and sometimes even enlighten the doctors. This goes to show the value of all this forum are ensuring we are informed of the latest research and information. I would not have known to bring this up if I hadn’t read this thread!
Thanks all. |
