A can of Coke staves off midday hunger

If the amount of caffeine in a mini can of Coke was enough to suppress appetite, I think I would weigh <100 instead of 115. I have about 3 cups of black coffee, two double espressos, and a canned iced espresso most days. Still hungry!

How many hours of sleep do you get?? That’s a ton of caffeine. I have one mug of coffee in the AM and that’s it and it still affects my sleep 😣 I also weigh a lot more than you and pretty much always hungry 🤪 also, why don’t people on dcum use emoji’s more? I feel like an oddball using them.

The sugar content is atrocious, so you must be operating on a rather large margin of weight loss if that works for you.

Also, it's not good for avoiding diabetes. Huge insulin spike.

People really know nothing about diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease, is not caused by consuming sugar and can not be prevented. You do not get diabetes from consuming sugar. If you are not overweight and exercise a can of coke a day will not cause type 2 diabetes.

Insulin spikes all the time when you consume any carb, not an issue unless you are in fact diabetic.

Yes, queen.

I’m staying in a deficit, but I often find myself unnecessarily (because I just had a balanced and protein-heavy lunch) “hungry” (in quotes because I’m not actually hungry, maybe bored?) between when I have lunch around 1pm and when I have dinner around 6ish. I find that if I nurse a can of Coke (140 cal) until I go home and prepare dinner, I do great with my intentional eating. I understand, though that it’s empty calories and the sugar screws with insulin, etc. But what if this is the one thing that stops the food noise, and only “costs” me 140 cal?

Water would accomplish the same thing. We often confuse thirst with hunger. Do seltzer if you want carbonation. Add a bit of fruit juice for flavor if you need.

Coke is artificial and will ruin your teeth and is pure sugar.

That increases cancer risks. Fake sweeteners = toxins.

Many office workers drink 5-10 cups of coffee a day. It's staggering. Is why they get so fat also.

Black coffee (1-2 cups) has no calories and gets rid of my hunger.

When I worked in an office, I ate peanut m&m’s every.single.day. to get past the 4 pm slump. A yogurt or fruit did nothing for me, I was addicted to the sugar.

If it’s the caffeine + carbonation combo that’s doing it for you, maybe try the bubbly bounce waters?

Anonymous wrote:OP I am a lifelong Coke addict (not a coke addict!) and this doesn't really work. It conditions you to turn to sugar when you have hunger cravings, instead of eating something more nutritious. It starts with a can of Coke at lunch but then you really want one with dinner, too. Then if a midafternoon hunger pain hits, you want a coke instead of something more nutritious. It also winds up making you dislike plain water so much more than you would otherwise because you are used to getting the hit of sugar and caffein with a cold beverage. I have had to train myself to like water again, which is stupid.

I love Coke and also it's basically evil. I still drink it sometimes and it goes straight to the pleasure centers of my brain -- it has a better impact on my mood than alcohol or even like a really good chocolate cake. But it's so addictive. It took me years to turn it into an occasional treat as opposed to a daily addiction, and it only happened ultimately because I gained a bunch of weight very suddenly in my mid-40s, thought about how my mom (also totally addicted to Coke) had never been able to take her mid-40s weight gain off and had only added to it, and decided I need to totally overhaul my diet. Coke had to go.

It is no longer allowed in our house. I can order it at a restaurant a couple times a month. I miss it!

I have very similar feelings about Coke! I do feel like Coke Zero is remarkably similar to the real thing but when I occasionally treat myself to a case of mini Coke zeros, I keep them in the trunk of my car so I won’t splurge too much.

Anonymous wrote:Generally, sugar is the least filling food, so 140 calories of nuts or fruit would be more filling than a can of Coke. I wonder if it's the caffeine that's really helping you. If it's working, no need to change, but you could also switch to unsweetened or slightly sweetened tea or coffee and see how that works.

Correct. It's the caffeine.

Disagree, it's the bubbles/carbonation.

It is likely both. Honestly, if it works and the OP sticks to one can, it seems fine.

Eat as much fruit as you want. Not many calories and very filling.

I don't see the issue. Food is to be enjoyed. If you are otherwise healthy and eating enough nutritious food, who cares if you want a coke or a cookie or a few pieces of chocolate as a mid-day treat.

It's not the coffee that makes you fat. 5-10 cups of black coffee will not do this. It's the milk or cream, the sugar, the flavored syrups, etc.

How the hell is yogurt a swap for a cold, carbonated soda?

Why not do brussel sprouts instead?

If your goal is to stay in caloric deficit, and you know a 140cal can of Coke helps you do this, and you know you’re not actually hungry, why would you advise this person consume 300+ calories? Nobody wants an apple and peanut butter. Enough with the apple and peanut butter![b]

Lol

+100 Lols, when I read this the first time I admit I mentally auto inserted a few F bombs before apple and peanut butter.
