Tariff impact on day to day goods?

Major retailers like Walmart are warning about this. There have also been social media posts from folks who do instacart about how stock is dwindling and not getting replaced. Yes, it’s coming mid-May shortages begin.

This doesn't take into account that the companies that supply Walmart, Target and Home Depot built their inventory up ahead of time to weather the tarrifs through Q2 of 2025.

This actually does take that in to account. You think economists who study this for a living would miss that? Unlike you the economists are actually basing their forecasts on hard data.

No one wants to work in manufacturing. There is no reason to replace high paying white collar jobs with low paying factory jobs.

I have yet to see one person quit their white collar job for a manufacturing job. Do you know anyone who wants their kids to work in a factory? Let’s have Trump’s children quit their jobs and work in a factory.

Also the US has/had a huge surplus in services section exports. This is not 1920.

Trump is incompetent

Great. But before you cut off the hand that feeds you, you need to be producing those goods yourself. We are not. We are not even set up for sufficient manufacturing now. Why don't Trumpers understand you can't put the cart before the horse?

Because trans people. I know it doesn't make any sense, but apparently it does to the trumpers.

Ports like Long Beach and Seattle have laid off dock workers and truckers for lack of cargo. I can't imagine how small businesses are going to survive.

Small businesses aren't surviving. In the nonprofit world, where charitable works rely on the donations of those who have to help those who do not, we've had multiple donors who are small business owners let us know not to expect their usual donations because they are closing their businesses and are worried about making their personal ends meet.

That's true. But it's also true that the tariffs will cripple our economy. Both things can be true at the same time.

And for those who don't shop at any of those stores? Where are they going to get their goods?

So why is UPS laying off 20,000 workers and planning to close 73 facilities if this is just business as usual?

I'm bullish on local farmers' markets. Once store shelves start emptying out, you'll be shopping for groceries in the street.

This is a bit doomsday. But I have some concerns about how people will act when the shelves are empty this time. During peak Covid shortages, most people were holed up in their houses and limiting contact with individuals. This time, that wont be the case.

We're blaming economists now! MAGA told us they hate economists. They all think this is an unmitigated disaster.
