Thoughts on UMCP engineering vs Purdue

Apparently not based on the more reasoned responses.

Yeah, if it wasn’t for the local UMD boosters here this wouldn’t really be a question. Especially as Purdue is the cheaper option.

Hasn’t had any issues getting the classes that he needs. Lots of apartment options right off campus that are closer to the classroom buildings than most of the dorms are.

There are lots of opportunities for UMD engineering/CS students with tech firms along the I270 and Dulles Parkway corridors. Defense contractors like Lockheed, RTX, Boeing, BAE Systems, SAIC, Leidos, and others recruit for summer and full time roles at UMD. If your child is interested in aerospace engineering (neutral bouyancy pool) or root-craft, UMD has unique capabilities.

Maybe most don't want to go to school in the middle of nowhere Indiana and freeze on a depressing campus. Just sayin.

Most of this is operational IT with some exceptions in DOD spaces.

Hijiacking this thread a bit - my DC trying to decide between Tufts engineering and Purdue. Understand difference in location, but in terms of competition with other students, how real (or not so much) is finding jobs/internships with neighboring schools in Boston-Harvard, MIT, NEU, BU etc... vs. the sheer numbers of students at Purdue? (or maybe all those schools combined is similar) And is the level of learning very different in engineering at these schools?

You say this as if College Park is a desirable tropical location.

Neither are ideal campuses, but a person is probably going to prefer one over the other for any number of reasons.

Maryland is within a few miles of our nations capital. It’s a large university with a beautiful campus. But yeah let’s talk about the town of college park. lol. Dude, Purdue is in the freaking middle of nowhere in Indiana and it’s ugly as crap. But you do you.

We did admitted students day. Did not care for the crowds, moldy dorms or construction noise. It felt sort of dirty - I think the academics are good but we did not like the campus. But I see a lot of UMD boosters here so you will hear both sides.

lol at "did not care for the crowds".

+1 did not "care for the crowds" on an admitted students day? LOL

If you don't care for "crowds", maybe your DC needs a SLAC?

UMD had half the acreage of Purdue so the experience is different - yes, crowded. And had a lot of weirdos in the mix whereas Purdue felt more All American - no purple hair, no extremists. If you like that that is fine, I don't. Getting into some building was like squeezing into a sardine can with the student traffic. Again, not a fan.

UMD boosters are so sad.

Not as sad as Purdue's campus.

Purdue had more acceptances than expected last year & not enough dorm space.

Friend's kid is one of 3 in a room designed for 2. His kid is fine though, b/c roommates all get along.
