Lost my job

Anonymous
Hi OP - so sorry, I also lost my job as a fed after over 20 years. I started telling everyone I know that I was looking and asked for recommendations and help. It was humbling. Miraculously someone I’m still in touch with who I haven’t worked with since 2008 told me about a firm hiring for someone with my background and I just got the job, starting next week. My advice is to proactively reach out to people you know and tell them what you’re looking for, someone will know someone who can help you. If I knew you I would set you up to talk with other friends in your field. Good luck, I know it’s hard but there is someone out there who will hire you!

-I left education after 15 years because it was terrible for my health in many ways. It’s a last resort because I feel like I’ll be suicidal again. My students were not getting the best of me before I left.

-I’m newer to consulting and picked a shit time to start, so yes I am very frazzled.

-I live in a small condo, which I could rent out. If I move out I’ll have to move back in with my parents as I don’t even know where I could afford rent in moco.

-I think I have a good network but I know the market is really difficult. I looked for 2 years before landing this job & felt so lucky.

Thanks for the suggestions here.

Renting the condo and moving back with your folks until you get full-time employment sounds like a good plan. It keeps your options open while giving you the time to intensively job hunt.

+1. Very encouraging. Congratulations.

I encourage you to rethink your life and become a job creator. Have you thought about opening a casual dining restaurant?

I honestly can't tell if this is a troll or just incredibly put of touch.

Sure, a restaurant! It’s easy. Anyone can do it. Especially in this economy.

This is brilliant trolling, it’s what they suggested in the FDIC buyout info session.

don't worry

Democrats are hard at work increasing immigration. which supposedly will help US citizens find jobs.

1. Biden refuses to mandate e-verify. there is no reason to require corporations to hire US workers. -https://www.governing.com/work/e-verify-creates-loophole-for-undocumented-workers-employers.html

2. Biden helps US companies replace US workers with cheap foreign labor by expanding H1B - https://www.axios.com/2022/01/12/h1b-visa-approval-rate-tech-biden-immigration

3. Biden expanded OPT to new job categories, this helps companies replace US workers with cheap foreign indentured servants - https://www.fragomen.com/insights/united-states-white-house-announces-expansion-of-stem-opt-program-and-other-initiatives-to-attract-stem-talent.html

F1 - Legal system requires F-1 students to remain with employer for approximately 7-12 years

4.Biden proposes to create brand new W-1 visa with unlimited Green Cards, because we mythically don't have enough workers in the US, we devalued a master with H1B, and now we will devalue PhDs with W-1 visas - https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2022/01/27/house-adds-game-changing-visas-for-immigrant-startups-and-phds/?sh=500faa1810be

This is why life is more and more like The Onion. Next they'll suggest we try casino gambling.

OP what about those language learning websites? Where you connect with an adult who wants to practice their conversational English in a Zoom-like setting. You could do that from home during off hours bc a lot of the users live in a different time zone.

need more context, what are you skills, what is your job, are you a fed or contractor? What are you looking for support, advise, encouragement?

I won’t give too much away as people will be able to figure me out, but think workforce transformation, education, etc. I am pretty flexible. I have my masters. If all else fails I can go back to teaching but I really really don’t want to. I don’t know what I’m looking for I’m just so scared. My car is a few months from being paid off. I still have years on my mortgage. I’ve been applying to jobs basically since December and I’ve only had one interview.

Think about looking at places like Gartner or other companies where you could lend expertise as a consultant to the education industry.
