What’s going on in Romania is far more blatant. Elmer’s involvement in German elections was relatively minor, and he’s not an existential threat. Banning a candidate is an extreme action, but it’s in response to an extreme threat. You can compare this to being at war; some rules have to go out the window.

They’re not dumb enough to think they can live peacefully with Russia. Many there still remember the USSR days and all that entailed, not to mention Ceaucescu, their own form of trump. It’s no secret Russia has designs on Transnistria and Moldova as a whole, which in turn will bleed over into Romania. That’s been festering for many years. You’re just making stuff up.

Label anything as dangerous to declare a state of emergency. Enact martial law. Throw political opponents in jail. Cancel elections. These types of things never happen in true democracies.

It’s a dicey game for sure. At some point someone has to make a judgement call though. Banning this guy was not one person’s decision, so it’s not a dictator thing. I do think Romania might be looking at the US and thinking they can’t allow the same to happen there, which is understandable.

So the Romanian people have to cancel elections, prohibit a guy from running and maybe just throw him in jail because he's too popular to stop otherwise, in large part because he doesn't want to do the proxy war against Russia bit. Romanians probably thought when they joined the EU and NATO that they would suddenly be donning ties and cashing German checks. They probably didn't check the fine print for the "meat-shield against Russia" clause.

Maybe the Romanians who actually stayed in Romania see things differently than the diaspora who are nice and far away from the next battlefield. You might sing a different tune if the Romanian version of TCC could knock on your door any day and stuff you or your kids in a van.
