So you want to not have democracy to not have a dictatorship? Please make it make sense.

They want a democracy with elections that are not heavily influenced by nefarious foreign elements, something we failed to achieve here. They want elections that reflect the will of the people, not Putin.

I would think the US is a wake up call for many democracies on how not to run an electoral process, and what happens when you don’t get it right. People are still in awe at how far the country has fallen in such a short time and don’t want to suffer the same fate.

Thank you, yes. Democratic countries have fair elections, not sham Russian influence campaigns. It’s a shame that we had tj fall but we can be a lesson to the rest of the world. It’s going to take a long time to recover from this.

Every election we have had for a while has been influenced by nefarious foreign elements. You are extremely naive if you think foreign governments started meddling in elections starting in 2016. It is no reason to shut down democracy and turn to authoritarianism.

We all know that, but it’s a lot worse now. If you see someone who is an obvious foreign agent making inroads into your government you need to do something about it. Otherwise your democracy gets shut down anyway, as we’re seeing here now.

Still trying to paint the fascist subversion as an exercise in democracy?

No one cares. No one thinks that shutting out criminal foreign agents is authoritarianism. Please get new talking points.

seriously- its this simplistic American thinking that allowed a HAMAS and TALIBAN to run as political parties in US sponsered elections to the ruin of their people. fascists should not be allowed to run- difeerent societies have different rules- the USA has no business telling other people what to do. This is why im actually glad that USAID is dismantled. Saying that the USA is less toxic than Russia or China is a truism but maybe teh countries of teh world have to stop being so dependant on super powers and actually get tehir crap together. We know that even the poorest developing nations have a powerful and extremely wealthy oligarchical ruling class- maybe they can pay taxes and actually fix their own societies instead of using american middle class taxpayer funds to bandaid over the extreme injustice in their countries while they allow the europeans and top 1% americans to rob their people blind while taking a slice of the pie a la the Shah, Pakistani PM, Nigerian PM etc etc.

It’s funny because it’s the democrats that haven’t allowed their party to actually elect a representative since Obama. Yet they say it’s the Republicans that mock democracy.

Or those in power see a disruption to their power and claim Nazi, Bolshevik, etc.

Let's pretend what you said is true. Then maybe people should ask why what Russia is selling is so popular and what the EU is selling is so unpopular.

Maybe we should also start asking about the utility of a system that can be controlled by Tik Tok.

What didn’t you cancel the recent elections in Germany. Didn’t Elon Musk influence that election by using his platform to support the right wing parties?

Republicans bemoaning the anti-democratic events in Romania while refusing to defend an actual democracy in the Ukraine is yet another glaring example of their hypocrisy.

Are you talking about the country that had a coup overthrow it's elected president then banned opposition parties and press and then suspended elections?

Shouldn't we be sanctioning countries that do that?

pro-Russian candidate was elected. US backed a coup in Ukraine to remove this pro-Russian candidate.
In response to the coup, Russia seized Crimea.
Now Ukraine is under martial law with elections canceled.

What’s going on in Romania is far more blatant. Elmer’s involvement in German elections was relatively minor, and he’s not an existential threat. Banning a candidate is an extreme action, but it’s in response to an extreme threat. You can compare this to being at war; some rules have to go out the window.
