Given the headlines about coaches, athletes and entertainers from other countries being detained or denied admission into the US, I am not sure how the country can host the olympics or world cup in the coming years.

The World Cup will be a problem.

+1 all those people coming through Canadian and Mexican borders. Those prison camps will be overflowing.

Will that prevent the government from abandoning democracy? I was looking for some hope that the patriotism and glamour of hosting the Olympics might be a more powerful check on Trump becoming more autocratic, but perhaps any international protest would be sadly spun/interpreted as “deserved” economic punishment for liberal Angelenos (even though LA and SoCal has many Rs, too).

I find a boycott unlikely.

I find an enormous debacle incredibly likely - one way or the other.

1) The Olympics' organizers resist Trump's inevitable meddling and Trump/the Trump Administration retaliates by messing with visa, etc., public insults to the athletes, etc.; or

2) Trump is allowed to be involved, is personally involved, and it's the modern equivalent of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and we perhaps never live down the shame.

We are never going to live down Donnie’s shame, anyway. We can’t unelect him even if we get rid of him.

And FIFA had already raised up about our travel and visa timing already being a problem before we went to hacking government, revoking visa and illegally detaining people. Their strategy meetings must be tense everyday.

Some athletes may be afraid to come for fear of being stopped at the border and thrown into an El Salvador prison.

Bingo. This is exactly what you fear mongers want. They should definitely stay home.

The US has denied the visas of all 12 members of the Senegalese women’s basketball team who were scheduled to travel to the country as part of their preparation for the Afrobasket tournament that begins in August. Afrobasket is also the African qualifiers for the Olympics.

I guess the US is going to seriously contend losing the olympics.

I think boycott is unlikely, but I predict a real mess as Trump will absolutely not be able to handle the Olympics not being about him.

It will likely be an embarrassing jingoistic display. I can see individual US athletes put in difficult positions.

There are tickets still available for today's games in New Jersy and Atlanta. They cannot sell these tickets because international fans are not showing up.

At this rate, no one is going to want to come to the Olympics in the US. Thanks Trump.

And MAGAs won’t go because they’ll think that LA has burned to the ground.
