Is there a point at which other countries will boycott the LA Olympics in response to Trump’s disrespectful treatment and restrictions on the press? Will that prevent the government from abandoning democracy? I was looking for some hope that the patriotism and glamour of hosting the Olympics might be a more powerful check on Trump becoming more autocratic, but perhaps any international protest would be sadly spun/interpreted as “deserved” economic punishment for liberal Angelenos (even though LA and SoCal has many Rs, too).
I find a boycott unlikely. I find an enormous debacle incredibly likely - one way or the other. 1) The Olympics' organizers resist Trump's inevitable meddling and Trump/the Trump Administration retaliates by messing with visa, etc., public insults to the athletes, etc.; or 2) Trump is allowed to be involved, is personally involved, and it's the modern equivalent of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and we perhaps never live down the shame.
We are never going to live down Donnie’s shame, anyway. We can’t unelect him even if we get rid of him.
