Getting rid of Tesla? What car did you get/are you going for?

Carmax passed. I submitted to Carvana and even though I was supposed to get an instant quote, the email I received said an advisor would reach out, so I'm not holding my breath.

The local dealers I've gone to have passed as well.

I sold a Tesla last week to Carvana but had locked in the offer 2 weeks prior.

I had an ID4 for 2 years and thought it was a solid car. Took it on two different roadtrips and got great range.

I now have a Lucid Air. Absolutely love it. It's a great city car but also has amazing range (400 miles). It's almost just a beautiful car and the inside is actually bigger and more comfortable than the ID4, though the ID4 appears like a bigger car. (Have to say though-- the steering radius on the ID4 was tighter than Lucid. This is only something I notice because we park in our tiny alley or in tight street spots; I don't think it would be noticeable at all otherwise.)

It seems silly to get rid of it. Just don’t buy. A new one.

Except that people judge you for driving one.

The people who are judging are the ones who have a problem.

Unless it is a cybertruck.

Exactly. In the Washington DC area, I refuse to judge Tesla sedan owners: they bought reasonably-priced cars with a lesser environmental impact, knowing Musk was a little crazy, but before he turned out to be a Nazi destroying our government.

Cybertrucks are another story. They are extremely heavy, and they have an even smaller front safety bumper than other large vehicles, which is very dangerous in a collision. They were never allowed for sale in Europe, not for political, but for safety reasons. I definitely judge all Cybertruck owners.

They also just look insanely stupid. I judge anyone who bought a car that is clearly just a joke. I actually think Musk tried to think of the stupidest possible design to see if people would still buy it-- and they did.

But normal sedan Teslas are common in DC, and I don't give them another glance.

Why would you judge someone for driving an environmentally friendly car? Do you really think the people who bought these cars agree with anything this administration stands for? Use some critical thinking skills.

Or you could get an "Anti-Elon Tesla Club" sticker for your car. I saw one the other day.

We have a Volvo XC40, can recommend it. No issues.

You might consider the Chevy Equinox EV. You would give up power and storage space (no frunk), but you would get a better ride and it is cheaper. You can still charge on the Tesla Supercharger network. What might be the biggest downside for you is the location of the charge port which is on the driver's side front. But your charger cable is probably long enough to reach it.

Another option is the latest Hyundai Ionic 5. The software is not near as good but the newest version comes with a NACS charging port and it charges faster and has longer range than the Tesla.

A third option is the BMW i4. Its charging is not as good and the range is less, but it's a very nice car.

+1

We are staunch Democrats and have a Tesla. The last thing we want to do for our planet and personal finance is to get rid of our Tesla. Yes, our next car will not be another Tesla. But, how do I hurt Elon Musk if I sell my existing Tesla? This is so stupid.

Who cares? The same people live in a country that has elected Trump and letting Musk run this country. The bigger shame is that we are Americans and have elected Trump.

I would disagree. Tesla in general sucks from a reliability standpoint, at least according to Consumer Reports. Tesla is #17 out of 22 car brands.

The Model Y was a 1 out of 5 for noises/leaks and a 2 out of 5 for build quality.

Irrespective of Elon, it was a bad idea to get a Tesla in the first place, especially based on their known build quality problems. Add to it Elon's drive to minimalize buttons/knobs and place the speedometer and other things on a center console which were bad safety ideas. It made sense at the beginning when there were few BEV options, but now, not so much. There are better cars out there now.

Gosh, I hope this tanks the resale price of my Tesla so that I can appeal the car tax appraisal and pay a lot less in car tax. This could save me many thousands.

I don’t judge people that bought them in the past. I judge the people that have purchased them in the last 3 months.

And after todays stunt at the White House, I’ll especially judge anyone else that purchases them new now.

They don't have critical thinking skills. There are idiots now who also engage in road rage against basic Tesla models which are as common as any other car and people use them to commute. They don't understand that political protesting on a road or a highway can be deadly or at least destroy their life forever, plus hurt a bunch of innocent people in the process in the nearby vehicles. Such morons should be legally persecuted and sent to jail. Honestly if you are driving erratically or doing something to distress a Tesla driver near you and it causes an accident you should go to jail.

OP back - thanks for all of the suggestions.

For the record I bought my model Y three years ago, no Teslas have Apple Car Play (to address that comment) so I wouldn’t miss it if I did trade it in but honestly, I’m not loaded enough to make an idealistic move to get rid of my car. Going to get the bumper sticker instead. I bought it used with very low miles, so Elon only got my money with the home charger one time purchase and then when I roadtrip/charge at Supercharger. For now, I live with the Supercharger knowledge but with kid about to go off to college I don’t want to dump money into a new car.

I wish Tesla would boot Elon… so annoying.

I am looking at the smaller Rivian which hits in 2026 but again - college. New car isn’t crucial. This whole situation sucks.
