Any change would require legislation. It’s not like all the local laws would go away immediately - like most crimes are DC code not federal crimes. They’ll stay around too, unless changed. |
Biden erased billions in federal loans for millions of people despite the Supreme Court saying it was illegal. So I think that’s why Trump thinks he has wide latitude here. |
He tried to, but the courts struck down some of it, and allowed others of it. Law and all. |
Y’ver work with DCRA? I would love if Congress took over our building permit process. |
If rents go up considerably, then wages would also have to go up |
No they are doing away with all those laws. |
My recent DCRA experience was pretty smooth…it’s historic district nonsense that needs to be overhauled. Honestly, my day-to-day interactions with DC are all pretty smooth. No wait at the Georgetown DMV…made a 311 pothole complaint and it was filled within 24 hours…filed to remove a dying tree and a DC arborist came out and gave the thumbs up within 48 hours…streets were plowed quickly in last snow storms…etc. |
Same here. The DC311 app is awesome - stuff gets taken care of pretty quickly and I probably report something weekly. Bulk trash pickup from my house is an amazing service - they recently hauled away my broken water heater. DPW is great at fixing potholes, DOT with fixing issues with street lights. My experiences with DC DMV have all been super smooth. I'll report illegally parked cars and they are usually ticketed within hours. |
DCRA is actually really easy to work with. If congress took it over you would cry about how bad congress is. Complainers will always find something to complain about. |
Easily. They would say look at the “hell hole” Washington DC is now. We remove the burden on income tax, limit local taxes and remove the consumer protections laws, DC will be turned in to Monaco. Plus all the staff, senators and representatives living in DC will not have to pay taxes. Apartments will be turned in to condos, vacant office buildings with be either converted to condos or used as headquarters. It will be great! |
People are pushed when rising property values increase their property taxes, and they cant afford it anymore. |
Same here. I think folks are stuck on the refrains from the 80s. |
Congress can't even pass a temporary budget! |

Pay attention: the only people who push to eliminate Home Rule in DC are Republicans. The bills to repeal home rule are always introduced by Republicans. There are reasons for this.
Prior to Home Rule, a Congressional Committee, all appointed by the President, governed DC. The committee had ultimate authority over D.C., with the ability to table or vote against any laws or funding concerning the District. The Chair of that committee had the authority to starve DC, to decide what was legal or not legal (abortion anyone?????), who could build, who could open a store, literally everything in the hands of one man appointed by the President. For a long time that was Rep. John L. McMillan, a segregationist Democrat from South Carolina. DC used to be called the MacMillan Plantation, and its citizens do not wish to be enslaved again by Trump and his Congress. |
First of all, Metro is in great shape and recovering nicely from COViD. second, DC is in great shape fiscally and still has an AAA+ bond rating, something most states don't have. Third, there are 700,000 people living in the city, there isn't a lack of people. Is the Council a little too progressive? Maybe, but that is what the people who live here and pay taxes here voted for. |
