All of these things are 504 things. Extended time on assignments is a thing but avoiding penalty for missing that deadline isn’t. You might want to consider requesting alternate ways to turn in assignments, like by email. Also always take a photo of every completed assignment in case it doesn’t get turned in or it gets lost. As for getting something in place until she is enrolled, the school can’t help you. And you can’t enroll before you’re ready to move her because after 2 weeks if she doesn’t attend, she will be disenrolled. You need to go to the MCPS office of private parochial schools to request an evaluation. That office is responsible for evaluations for kids in private. If you Google it, all of the information will come up. If your neuropsych is current and further testing isn’t needed you may be able to shorten the process. But I wouldn’t expect to have anything formal in place until close to the end of the year. So you will have to work with the teachers to provide informal accommodations. Some schools are really good about doing so because it is a best practice. |
Our counselor specifically told us we can't have a list of assignments in our 504 plan. |
Well you need to push back. You can say they must provide a list of all assignments. It is in our 504. If the school really won’t do it and your kid needs it, appeal. |
extra time can also apply to assignments. we had "renegotiate deadlines" as an accommodation in addition to extra-time. IME, the problem is that teachers often don't grade things right away and by the time you know something was not turned in, it is also too late to hand it in late. But, it is still worth getting these and trying to use them. YMMV depending on teacher. |
| OP, if your child is being supported in private, keep them there. MCPS schools are very large and its easy for kids to get lost. With teachers its hit or miss. Some go above and beyond and some do the absolute minimum. Transfering a child in Feb, except if they are forced to leave is cruel. It takes months to get an IEP so you will not have one till at least next school year. Go to the office of private school for an IEP for now. |
Did you read OP's post? Her kid is not being supported in private. |
All they said was that child was only getting extra time. The things discussed here are a dream. |
The things under discussion here, other than being able to turn in assignments late with no consequence, are all in my child's 504 plan. |
Renegotiate deadlines is a good one. We found that happened as a matter of course but it’s better to be included. As to the not being graded or grades not being posted issue, I found that alternative options for turning assignments was the winner when it came to success. If you turn it in by email you have a record that’s pretty hard to challenge. And I had my kid copy me on the email. One caution. For me extra time on assignments was not a gift. There is an ultimate deadline and having things get backed up was a disaster. Keeping up worked far better. My son is now in CC and I still see the same problem of an almost insurmountable backlog due to extended time if he opts To use it. |
