Not the poster you're responding to, but we often had these in our family either for Sunday dinner or holidays/special occasions. It's a sweet story and sort of ties to your "old-timey" reference but my mom (who grew up poor in the country) was nannying for a family with more money "in town" in the 1950s. She saw Cornish game hens in a catalogue spread for a Christmas table, thought it looked so elegant, and said to herself "When I grow up and have money and my own house, that's what I'm going to serve" so she often did once she was in a position to. They are indeed visually impressive and wonderful. |

Tonight we had a shepherds pie thing (with lots of veggies thrown in) but instead of mashed potatoes, the potatoes are thin sliced on the mandolin and basted with butter and salt. Roasted broccoli as a side.
Last night made a chicken and leek gnocchi bake with cheese. |
