Schools That Never Win Titles

It seems superficial but some schools like Langley, Madison and Robinson seem to rack up championships every year and others like Herndon, Falls Church and Justice never seem to.

It’s very simple, good sport highschools are a direct result of great youth sports programs. Vienna has the best youth football, lacrosse and baseball programs in Fairfax and as a result - Madison is competing for titles in those sports every year. In contrast, Vienna has a struggling youth wrestling program and no surprise Madison had a terrible wrestling program. Chantilly has the best rec wrestling program and as you would guess Chantilly is the odds on favorite to win regionals this year.

I wasn't asking why wealthier schools with a lot of White kids tend to get the most titles (with exceptions for boys basketball and, to some degree, soccer). It's fairly clear why - more private lessons from a young age and better youth sports programs.

I was asking whether people were embarassed if their schools never or rarely win anything while other schools rack up titles year after year.

Why so woke? I guess you have a lot of time on your hands since you’ve been furloughed.

No more embarrassed than you are for asking such a stupid question.

It actually sucks to be at one of these schools, unless you have a great athlete. Other kids don't get to play sports at all, even if they are pretty good. I wish someone would investigate how many of these athletes transferred in. We have one team that is always on top, and I personally know three kids that were recruited from a nearby school. I actually heard the coach talking to one of them back when they were a bit younger.

Like Robinson and Lake Braddock.

That response is a bit of a self-own. It shouldn't be that hard to answer the question.

Wasn’t Herndon the Baseball state runners up champs a couple years ago? Annandale, Falls Church, Lewis, and Justice are among the weakest sports schools currently. I suppose the planned equity boundary changes may seek to mollify that inequity. But no maps have been published yet and it’s all pure speculation.

Demographic assumptions don’t fit always fit the stereotypes. South Lakes won the state basketball championships with a lot of white kids. Same with Woodson a few years ago. State championship soccer teams at the 6A level have skewed plurality white.

Also made the state final in volleyball in 2021.

My children are at a school that doesn’t win a lot of titles. Nope they aren’t embarrassed. They still show up to support their school at football and basketball games. They’re excited about their wins in the regular season. They do a great job celebrating their achievements. It’s a little sad to come to the school and all the banners are from a long time ago, but it doesn’t affect their school spirit and pride. This year one of the girls teams won districts for the first time and they made a big deal. It was fun to see everyone rallying around them.

FWIW, the earlier posters who talk about engagement have it right. Virtually anyone can play a sport at their school and that means the teams are reflective of the school population. And there is so much school spirit because there is such wide participation. It’s really wonderful to see.

The formula for winning is number of students in a school minus those on free and reduced lunch. Whichever school has the most wins. There are some exceptions due to sport, Coach, etc. but it generally holds true.

Why would someone be embarrassed? High school sports are not important to most people.

🤡 stop your dumb crusade. This is a thread about sports, it’s not a place for you to shill for the school board on unrelated topics.

I’m pretty sure that’s an anti-SB person trying to stir drama about equity.

Vienna does have good programs but after a certain age, kids go travel to stay competitive.
