Schools That Never Win Titles

They aren't a big deal however the area (Washington metro, yes Fairfax is included) produces top level competition.

I wished I had considered this when my kids were little. Our local FCPS HS is mediocre academically but the sports teams are almost impossible to make for normal sports. On top of that, kids seem to transfer in to play sports, taking even more spots. So kids who would make a team and play at a smaller school have no chance of participating in their own school's activities. Its a real bummer.

It seems superficial but some schools like Langley, Madison and Robinson seem to rack up championships every year and others like Herndon, Falls Church and Justice never seem to.

Not sure why Herndon continues to get dumped on for everything, but while Herndon does not have a ton of recent "District" championships, in the past five years, Herndon has won several Region championships including Boys Soccer, Baseball, Girls Volleyball, Dance Team and has had a number of dominant individual athletes including those in Boys Swimming, Boys and Girls Cross Country/Indoor/Outdoor Track and others. Many of the sports teams are both accessible and successful. Kind of a win-win situation, no?

It’s because parents like you have this weird inferiority complex. Totally happy for your kids that they won in those sports, just don’t advocate to bring my neighborhood kids to your school, and we can leave it at that.

And when the school board does its thing, don’t ever complain about those kids taking your kids’ spots or that it’s difficult to make a sports team with 2,700 kids at the school. You’ll get no sympathy at all for that complaint.

Wow. Yikes. That escalated quickly. Never mentioned any of those things and frankly don't care one way or the other about boundary changes (assuming as a Langley parent you do, but that's for another thread). Just frustrated that people who don't really know what Herndon is like continue to have a false opinion.

I was going to guess Westfield or South Lakes.

Our local HS wins things but the coaches are uniformly horrible- in terms of personality, treatment of athletes and really inappropriate things they say. I don't get it.

Dang! Take a chill pill. It’s not that deep. It’s just sports! Just a game!

Since last spring Hayfield's taken the crown for this TBH.

Because Langley is in a very wealthy neighborhood that kids were trained in both academics and athletics at a very early age. Poor people live in Justice pyramid, and they don't have the resource. Does that answer your question?

A middle ground is always good where the team is competitive but not impossible to make or one where they can't even field enough players.

Trust me, sometimes you just want the season to be over! Everybody is tired!

It’s very simple, good sport highschools are a direct result of great youth sports programs. Vienna has the best youth football, lacrosse and baseball programs in Fairfax and as a result - Madison is competing for titles in those sports every year. In contrast, Vienna has a struggling youth wrestling program and no surprise Madison had a terrible wrestling program. Chantilly has the best rec wrestling program and as you would guess Chantilly is the odds on favorite to win regionals this year.
