College advice for someone living in the Midwest!

Any chance OP is a veteran? Mich State will grant in-state tuition.

OP - what does your kid want to study?

Kalamazoo College could be 25k. Merit would be likely.

You need to have her research schools and merit aid or do it yourself instead of just saying you can’t afford anything outside Missouri.

What college does she want to go to? Is she even being reasonable?

Former Midwesterner here. This is solid advice. Many SLACS would be happy to have her.

Do not leave a college aged daughter in MO you are insane to do so

How ignorant and snobbish!

Maybe learn a little about this country before profiling an entire region based on what you "think" might be there. Tons of people are blue in MO - which you'd know if you had more than 1 brain cell.

OP, you daughter will be fine at a large school. Her test scores are not high enough to justify the cost of OOS.

There’s some great advice already here, but it would be helpful to know just why your daughter isn’t happy with the instate options in Missouri. If we know what she doesn’t want, it’s easier to point you toward something she might.

St. Olaf in Minnesota with merit aid came down to $35k a year. If you get need-based aid, you could meet your budget. There are other private schools in the Midwest that are good with merit aid. Miami of Ohio is another one I've heard mentioned.

OP here. She just wants to be back on the east coast (or west coast she says). It’s been a difficult few years for her here.

Wooster will do a merit/FA review before you apply, and they might be able to get you there. Great little school.

Got it. That's going to be more difficult to get under budget but not impossible. Your best bet is going to be small, rural, liberal arts college that really need students. One that gets mentioned on this board is Juniata.

I was going to share these Midwest merit offers from another thread:

Stats: 31 ACT 4.2w gpa
Macalaster $15K per year
Butler $30k per year
Luther $36K per year
Lawrence $45k per year
DePauw $46k per year
Beloit $49k per year
Knox $50k per year

If you can't afford outside the Midwest, look at schools that have a lot of students from across the country and around the world like Macalester.

The most they give out in merit aid is $25k/year so probably out of budget for OP.

Other state’s SLACs too. They like to have representation from many states and can be more generous to attract them

Get the SAT up a bit and look at Miami, OH or places like Iowa.
