| My 10yo son loves Ted Lasso and Young Sheldon (along with TGP). He knows swearing like they do in Ted isn’t appropriate. |
| PP. It's a movie. But I find that Everything, Everywhere All at Once is very similar to Good Place in its wackiness. |
| OP here. Thanks for all the suggestions; a bunch I had not heard of before. |
| Have you watched The middle? It is an old family sitcom that was so funny (and appropriate). |
| 30 rock? |
DP. I’m not very strict but I didn’t love how they handled the topic on that episode. Made it seem like most adults are doing drugs regularly and it’s fine. Not the message I wanted to send my 11 year old. But generally the show is fine to watch with kids. I usually look at the individual episode descriptions and ratings and skip some but didn’t think I needed to with Abbott - I wonder if that one was TV 14. |
My 9yo & 12you love The Middle! Especially the 12yo. |
| I’d recommend The Middle, too! I also really liked Speechless when it was on— around the same time frame as The Middle. It’s only 3 seasons. |

I think there’s nothing quite like good place but agree Brooklyn 99 is a good pick with a similar vibe, and Ted Lasso is great if you don’t mind British swearing. I wanna give a shout out to Super Store which I feel like never got the attention it deserved — very funny and I think relatable to anyone that has shopped in a Walmart or Target!
I really liked Mysterious Benedict Society on disney plus. It is really a very funny and well acted show — the writing is so clever. If you didn’t already watch it, the Lemony Snicket series on Netflix is also really great (Neil Patrick Harris stars and is phenomenal with an endless stream of celebrity cameos). I was also really liking the new live action One Piece on Netflix but then my son stopped watching with me because he’s a teen now and too cool to watch TV with his mom, sadly. |
| My kids loved A Man on the Inside |
PP who recommended the Middle: Superstore is definitely one of our favorites too. ITA it should have been a phenom. The male lead is from the DMV; I think he's a Churchill grad? There's a bit of risque talk/implication that might be too much for the OP's son, but it does a brilliant job of weaving contemporary social/political issues into a great ensemble comedy. OP, if by any chance your kid is interested in foreign policy, we also liked Madame Secretary during this stage. Silly for any Washingtonian who knows how things work but still fun and interesting. |
Came on here to say this. |
+1 Came to say the same. I know many folks who watch it with kids though I wouldn't go much younger than 10, but that's me. Also, the pilot is a bit of a one-off and the tone shifts by the second episode, so don't be put off if the characters in the pilot don't work for you. The show changed up some things based on the pilot, including losing an affair subplot immediately, and making some key characters more fun and less grating. (And I say that as a massive fan of the show!) |
The Netflix "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (the Lemony Snicket series mentioned above) is simply fantastic. Loved watching it with my kid. Don't bother with the feature film from years ago, watch the series to the very end! |
