I might be a freak, but my ex and I watched a lot of Dexter in the first few weeks of my daughter's life. Hopefully exposure to a serial killer show as a newborn won't affect her, lol! Great show.

If you are remotely into history, see if the Band of Brothers miniseries is available. I've never been a history buff, but I found it incredibly compelling.

yes, band of Brothers - nice call. It is AMAZING.
Also the John Adams miniseries from HBO - fantastic.
And Felicity...how could I forget?! Hello, Scott Speedman?

No, Scott Foley!!

Gossip Girl is mindless fun that won't give you bad dreams. Friday Night Lights is great.
Grey's Anatomy is also pretty easy.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!!! Forgot to mention my DH works late and I get sooooo scared about anything remotely scarey. Since I don't watch ANY tv, I really know nothing about any of these. Which ones might freak me out? I'm so excited about starting a couple series!!!!! Thank you guys so much!

The Wire is awesome! Absolutely my top choice!

But it's pretty heavy stuff sometimes. If you want something lighter:

Arrested Development
Entourage
West Wing

And even lighter and more girly:

Gilmore Girls
Felicity (old school!)

Oooh -- I just read some of the previous posts and am glad to see others recommended Felicity, too.

Also wanted to throw in another thumbs up for Friday Night Lights. Love that show!

Dexter is about a serial killer, the wire is a police/drug/mob ring crime drama in Baltimore (but is way more intelligent than that description), True Blood is a vampire drama. If you like WWII movies, Band of Brothers is amazing. Most of the others are more lighthearted like Weeds, dawson's creek, Felicity, Arrested Development. For drama, I also suggest Damages, which is cunning and intense but I woulnt consider it scary. Each season they show you how it ends so the show is about figuring out how/why.

She's going to be on a new show on Fox this fall. It's a comedy, but I forget what it's called. One of the guys from Arrested Development is the co-star.

One more: John Adams (HBO miniseries).

You would think it's boring history, but it was done SO WELL. Very gripping -- they did a great job making the characters interesting and kept the plot moving along. It was so entertaining that we found ourselves watching back-to-back episodes some nights. Oh, and we learned a lot, too. But that was a total bonus.

I worship the Wire, but it's heavy & gritty & I wouldn't have wanted to watch it w/o my DH.

I highly recommend Everwood. Great, underrated family drama that's heartfelt and intelligent and quirky and wonderfully written & acted. I burned through the entire third season the first week I was home alone with my new son.

I will echo the posters who suggested Gilmore Girls as well -- great mother/daughter bonding, particularly earlier seasons.

If you like West Wing, try Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Fantastic. Made by same people who did WW, but the setting is a behind the scenes of a sketch comedy show, a la SNL.

Also agree with suggestions for Band of Brothers, John Adams, and Dexter.

Also like United States of Tara.
