| Oklahoma has way more prestige. JMU is ranked in the 150s. If you want the prestige factor, go to Oklahoma. Not as much prestige as some schools like Penn State but still |
^^demented thinking on display |
Well look, I’m sure Oklahoma and Alabama serve an important role for those states. As they are supposed to do. |
We avoided these states due to backwards state laws. YMMV |
Oklahoma is an incredible school with national name recognition. JMU is fine but more regional name. |
Lol I guess if you're into sports |
Wow you are rude. Ever consider being nice? Also, it's trues. Oklahoma prestige is on par with most prestigious southern schools. |
| You're really having a pissing contest over the "prestige" of Oklahoma versus JMU? 😂😂😂 |
|
OP, just have them apply to all the Virginia schools you mentioned, and see where they get in. Done. Tour and compare later once admitted.

My son went to Virginia Tech. We live in Connecticut. As an out-of-state parent, I envy the great state colleges in Virginia. You are lucky to have so many great options at in-state tuition.
Why not UCONN? ------ My son went to Virginia Tech because we thought the engineering program was better at Virginia Tech than at UConn. And my son liked the campus and the mountains. Also job placement seemed more regional at UConn. The difference between UConn instate tuition and Virginia Tech out of state tuition at the time (2015-2019) was manageable. My son had a good experience at Virginia Tech, got a great job and is now in North Carolina. He did not want to stay in Connecticut. UVA, William & Mary and Virginia Tech are all better than UConn, in my opinion. UConn suffers from uneven funding and leadership, especially in STEM. I don't know the other state schools in Virginia but there seem to be multiple other public options in Virginia. |
"Prestige" of these schools depends on where you're from/live. I would not say Oklahoma has any "prestige" here; whereas JMU is very popular here, though its "prestige" is still relative and debatable. I think you mistake "nationally recognized name" with "prestige." |
Ok sure makes sense. |
"Prestigious southern schools?" What is a prestigious southern school? Most "prestige" is in the NE/Ivies/specific other private and state schools....none of which are "southern." The South is not really known for its prestigious academic institutions. They may be very old and very well known, some may have strong football teams. |
