I had the exact same thought |

This is absolutely horrendous, OP! If you have to do it, hopefully another passenger will switch seats so your 8 year old isn't alone. I know I would! |
It seems weird to me you can remember if you booked seats or not. At 6 months out there we’re definitely no cost seats to reserve. Did you receive emails notifying you of a change to your flight? You always need to “garden” your flight and hotel reservations, which means you check on them every so often to reconfirm they are correct. And read all emails from the airline regarding your flight. If you catch changes early they are much easier to fix. |
If you book standard (non basic) economy, you can select seats for free as long as free (non premium) seats are still available, which they would have been 6 months ago when OP booked. You must only book last minute if you think all seats must be paid to reserve. |
My first thought too! |
I agree. And it’s not even just the very real risk of that type of thing, it’s also the risk of emergency. Who is responsible for helping the child to evacuate or even just putting on their oxygen mask, if the parents are rows away from the child? Kids that young aren’t allowed to fly unaccompanied due to the risk to the airline so I don’t see what’s different when you prevent the parent from taking responsibility for their own child by deliberately seating them apart. |
You should have talked to a person at check in, not at a kiosk. They have the ability to move people around. If you were checking in early from home you should have called the airline. I’ve been moved before at the gate |
At 6 months out she had the option to choose free seats and didn’t for whatever reason. The option to choose free seats does not go away until much closer to the travel day as the flight fills up and others have chosen most of the seats. |
OP already answered this. Not sure why you feel the need to comment this. |
If everyone else already has their boarding passes with assigned seats, this is not possible. |
You clearly are pretty dumb and/or poor if you are complaining about something that would have been easily resolved if you booked and PAID for the tickets properly.
People like you need to get priced out of air travel in 2025 and beyond. That is my Christmas wish. |
You haven’t finished booking the flight until you have seats. |
This. And I won’t even pay until I can see that there are appropriate seats to select. |
The Department of Transportation has had to monitor airlines for this very reason to protect consumers. The amount of people who think this is Ok and blame the OP is astonishing.
Again, it’s United’s own policy to seat them with at least one adult. This is 2024. The software exists to see this and make sure it happens. Why it failed OP is not clear but it’s not OK. She very well could have chosen seats and they didn’t honor them - it happens all the time. |
