I booked back in August. I can’t believe I didn’t select seats if it was available, so no idea why all 5 of us including an 8 year old are all seated apart.
We tried to get seats together but plane was full. So when we boarded we asked someone to switch, but then the FA was upset about it. This was not United Basic, just standard economy which used to include seating together etc. what happened did they change planes and I lose my seat assignments— can you always select seats at booking I can’t see why I didn’t but it was six months ago… |
Sounds like you didn’t pay extra to reserve seats. Lesson learned. |
I thought Butigieg instituted a new rule where families had to be sat together. |
Yes, you can choose your seats at check in, and yes, United changes them all the time. Usually it’s due to a change in aircraft, but last week the gate agents changed our seats at the gate without telling us after we had already checked in and confirmed our seats. We are a family of four with two kids. Granted, they moved us into separate rows with extra seats so we could all spread out, which was awesome. But we didn’t know that. Point is, United changes seats. Often.

Search your email for your booking confirmation from back in August. If you had seats then they’d be listed there. |
We “chose” seats at check in but there was nothing available together. |
Which is why you pay to reserve in advance. |
It’s not a blanket policy. It’s confusing. https://thepointsguy.com/airline/family-seats-together-plane/ |
This doesn’t help you now but always check in the day before and call if you have a seat problem. Usually I check seats a few days before as well since they change often. |

then you needed to book your flight earlier |
If you do not have status with the airlines you will not even see all the available seats. I was simultaneously booking a flight with my sister. We were in the same room different phones. She has Delta status. I do not. When it cam to choosing seats...I could choose between a few middle seats. She had like 20 options middle, aisle and window. |
It's pay to play, that simple. Economizing on air costs is costly in this way. |
Even in United basic economy, a child under 12 can sit with one adult in the group for free. It’s right on the website. |
I always book seats together in advance but on occasion a change in plane has resulted in our seats getting scattered. My frustration is why ask for ages of kids if you’re just going to separate them from adults. Most times we’ve been able to arrive to airport early and get it fixed. |
