PSA: My house is too cold

Anonymous
You raised her. Tell her to pay rent & utilities or stop complaining.

If she owns the tortoise, she can buy it a heat lamp.

Our house is currently 64. 66 during the day. I don't love it, but utilities are expensive.

Do you have a basement? Do you worry about pipes freezing?

Mine is set to 68°. My house is not cold.

If you have a heat lamp on the tortoise, then you are just fine.

She needs to wear a layer of cuddleduds.

My dad keeps the house super cold by my standards. His comment was always, “put more clothes on.” I still dread spending time at home in winter.

As an adult, I know what utilities cost. It is worth it to me to spend less elsewhere so I can have a warm and cozy house.

You aren’t wrong for keeping it at your desired level. She isn’t wrong for thinking it’s cold and wanting it higher (though her delivery could clearly use help).

It is reasonable to expect a family member to wear long underwear inside the house?

She will when she graduates from UVA in May

If she thinks 68 degrees is too cold, then she is not getting a very good education at UVa. Freshman physics & chemistry people!

... saw how you slipped that in re: UVA, whenever they can

If you need to wear long underwear at 68 degrees, something else is going on w/ that person

Mine sets the thermostat to 74

That's the temp I turn my house UP to when I'm cold LOL

We have an Amazonian parrot, a northern breed dog and fluffy rabbits, and keep our temp at 66F. The parrot has a humidifier and bird-safe heating pads in the winter.

We have had the tortoise for 15 years. He is fine.

Russian Tortoise. Pretty sure it gets below 69 degrees in Siberia.

Pretty sure Russian Tortoises don’t live in Siberia. During the cold season where they do live tortoises hibernate. Cold temps outside of their hibernation period can f*ck them up. But it sounds like you don’t really care.

Some people's bodies are just like that. I'm at my mom's house with a silk undershirt, wool sweater, wool socks, and wool blanket over me on the couch and I'm freezing. Really hate it. My circulation sucks and I know it, but what can I do? Putting on even more layers doesn't change it-- my face is cold and I don't think I should have to wear a balaclava indoors. My body hates this climate and I'm counting the days until I can leave.

And then don’t be surprised/come complaining on dcum when she stops or scales back coming home to visit

+1

I do not like visiting freezing homes.

Get her a space heater at least.
