This^^^. Also 5pm EDT is 2pm PDT. No time is perfect. Encourage your kid to wait until they are home for so many reasons. Mainly so they can open it in a calms space without an audience. Because even if they get in, there will be someone nearby who didn't and that's just not nice to be making everyone deal with it at school.

Sort of like how ES/MS/HS release course schedules at 5pm the day before school---to avoid obnoxious parental complaints

And I'm not "freaking out"- I'm just noting that it's remarkably lacking in empathy.

Parents and students need to learn to deal with life. Wait until you are home to open the email. Nothing is going to change in the 30 mins that takes. And seriously, if your 17/18 is going to be so "extremely upset" that they cannot safely drive home from school, then perhaps dont' let them drive to school that day. They are not getting a death sentence or a cancer diagnosis---they are simply finding out if they got accepted at one school---most of the ED schools are low acceptance schools, so as a parent you should already have prepared your kid for the reality that they might not get in. Yes they can be upset, but not "so upset I cannot safely drive" . It's your job to prep them for how to handle things in life. Because this is nothing compared to real life
