“Mom/Dad says it’s too cold to play outside right now” .. what temperatures do you allow kids out to play?

Kids will tell you when it's too cold to play outside.

What in the world do ome of you think kids in cold climates do? They bundle up and go outside. They should be fine below zero if they are dressed for it, and haven't been convinced that it's too cold. They don't need to be out for hours.

Op send yours out, maybe others will get brave and join in. No reason they can't be out in -10 or more.

Op here. None of the parents were outside, just the kids. 6-13 year olds in elementary and middle school.

Do your kids play at recess?

I’m curious, do many kids not like cold weather?

We are in the DMV, not too cold not too snowy in these months either.

Your kids were still out of your hair and now their entertainment is gone. I’m in the DMV and no my kids don’t want to play outside when it’s 40. Do you let the neighbors play inside your home?

DP but you’re an awful person and a terrible mother. I hope your kids enjoy their parent-inflicted myopia.

Enjoying books, puzzles, games and crafts is just as virtuous as running around outside in the cold. Not every child has ADHD.

One, ADHD is not an insult. Two, it's weird that you think children who play outside must have ADHD. Three, playing outdoors is actually beneficial for children's vision. My child sees an ophthalmologist and was told to spend lots of time outside by the eye doctor and it actually has helped.

Ya'll are soft. Unless it is in the teens (farenheit) kids can wear appropriate clothing and go outside and play.

Agree with the midwesterner. 20 degree F is the cutoff

I grew up in Michigan - guess what we did on the days school was cancelled because it was too cold? We played outside.

*Before some sheltered mommy jumps on me, school was usually cancelled on these days because it was too cold for the busses to start, not because it was too cold to go outside. It was, however, frequently 10 degrees or lower on those days. We survived!

It’s literally not, though.

It is. OP will just have to entertain her own kids rather than expecting neighbor kids to do it. I suspect hers are hyper and annoying.

Why does dcum always think playing with the neighborhood kids is expecting childcare? It's just normal, being a kid fun.

Honestly I find both sides of this weird. Playing with kids in the neighborhood isn't childcare, but it's also not something the other kids are obligated to do if they don't want to because it's cold.

And literally nobody is trying to *make* anyone do anything, so what’s your point?

Dp Well the op wants to convince the neighborhood kids to come out to play..

They can be out in the mid-teens. Dress them for it, especially if they are a little older.

Kids in parts of Canada have outdoor recess until about -15 F. It's fine.

We moved to a new neighborhood and the kids here played outside everyday until the weather got cooler. They would run door to door to see who could play. There’s about 12 kids in total on just two streets and all attend the same schools. They now come right off the bus and inside for the evening saying it’s too cold out to play.

Should I not be sending my kids out with jackets and gloves when it’s cooler? It seems other parents do not let kids out in this weather in the neighborhood.

What’s reasonable for weather? It hasn’t been cooler than 40s and I expect it will get colder as winter comes about. Does playing outside stop when this weather comes?

Will it be no one outside for winter?

I send my kids outside if it’s above zero. If they get cold, they will come in. If they are outside playing, others will come out.

But yes - people around here think under fifty means it’s cold. So there will be less playing outside.

Perhaps the kids are blaming the weather but, don't want to play with op's kids? And not 'all people' think that below 50 is too cold to play!

Np. Go to any playground this weekend. It’s noticeably less busy and will continue to empty out as the weather gets colder.

It’s probably a safe bet to blame the weather over other kids suddenly developing a dislike for OP’s kids.

Its not too cold but it does get dark quickly these days. My son still plays outside but not as frequently. If its windy or wet he will not. I would say send your kids out and see if anyone else wants to join them.

All weather is ok if they have the appropriate gear and come in before getting frostbite. Your neighborhood parents are weenies if 40 is the minimum temperature required for playing outside!

Anonymous wrote:Any weather is fine. Unless it's heavily raining or there is a tornado watch. As a child I happily played in weather down to 10 below zero.

It's good for them, cold air kills germs in the lungs.

No, it doesn’t.

My kid plays outside, she’s 12 now. Played basketball with friends for 3 hours yesterday.
After school it might be a dark issue as well though. I would be more reluctant to have mine walking around dark streets at 5pm whereas in the summer that’s not an issue.

Any temp. They come in when their nose won't stop running and eyes are stinging, or they got snow inside their boots/gloves.

DMV is rarely, super rarely, too cold to play outside! Come on.
