(Our old neighborhood had few kids so this wasn’t an issue to question )
We moved to a new neighborhood and the kids here played outside everyday until the weather got cooler. They would run door to door to see who could play. There’s about 12 kids in total on just two streets and all attend the same schools. They now come right off the bus and inside for the evening saying it’s too cold out to play. Should I not be sending my kids out with jackets and gloves when it’s cooler? It seems other parents do not let kids out in this weather in the neighborhood. What’s reasonable for weather? It hasn’t been cooler than 40s and I expect it will get colder as winter comes about. Does playing outside stop when this weather comes? Will it be no one outside for winter? |
| Whatever temperature they want to go out in. If they're cold they'll come inside. |
| 40 is ok if kids have cold weather apparel. It’s in the 20s here and windy, and I think that’s too cold. |
|
40s is fine to play bundled up and kids get warm running around. It's still fun and good for them.
But the bigger issue is it gets dark so early and then it feels super cold (plus more dangerous with cars etc). Mine play outside but not after like 5pm anymore (early elementary). |
| Sorry your free childcare is gone OP. My kids don’t like the cold. |
Op here. None of the parents were outside, just the kids. 6-13 year olds in elementary and middle school. Do your kids play at recess? I’m curious, do many kids not like cold weather? We are in the DMV, not too cold not too snowy in these months either. |
Your kids were still out of your hair and now their entertainment is gone. I’m in the DMV and no my kids don’t want to play outside when it’s 40. Do you let the neighbors play inside your home? |
| Any weather is fine. They should dress appropriately and come in if they're cold. |
| Unless there is a polar vortex or some other highly unusual event it is literally NEVER too cold to play outside in the DMV. Just have your kids wear appropriate clothing. |
DP but you’re an awful person and a terrible mother. I hope your kids enjoy their parent-inflicted myopia. |
| My kids were out at playgrounds with cousins all weekend. With coats and hats and gloves with slip free fronts for holding onto money bars. We go out in all weather unless it's windy or blizzard. Im not american tho. We also ski and ice skate and bring hand warmers. Its not that hard. My kids preschool had them bring snow pants in October when they were little and they just put those on over regular clothes and a coat and went out for an hour + every day before a hot lunch. |
| As long as they’re dressed adequately, any temp likely in the DMV is fine. This isn’t Antarctica. |
Enjoying books, puzzles, games and crafts is just as virtuous as running around outside in the cold. Not every child has ADHD. |
I’m in the Midwest and the school policy is if the windchill is below about 20 degrees F, the kids stay indoors for recess. |

Any weather is fine. Unless it's heavily raining or there is a tornado watch. As a child I happily played in weather down to 10 below zero.
It's good for them, cold air kills germs in the lungs. |
