You probably also think Project 2025 isn’t real either!! The magnetic pouches render phones useless in an emergency. Did you know that? Teachers should collect phones in each class if they become a problem but the locked pouches or putting in lockers is a terrible idea and yes, there are people lobbying for that. You may not be as familiar with this at the middle and high school level but the movement to ban them (or make inaccessible does exist). Teachers do not get info from admin during lockdowns. Do you know how kids find out the lockdown is over??? Often it’s the parents who text their kids who tell teachers when they are locked in closets. Ask me how I know. And don’t come for a parent who’s been through this. Have you texted your kid hiding in a kiln or a closet crying because apparently someone with a gun is in the halls? Have you had a school shooting? Bomb threat? Kids in your school arrested for murder? Other MCPS parents have and are more qualified to speak about it than you. |
| Having phones in school doesn't make a difference if there isn't any cell service as is the case in many of these old school buildings. |
| You do not want armed security guards walking around an elementary school. Good God. |
| I have to walk quite a distance away from the building before I get any reasonable cellular service bars for Verizon. It is simply terrible and the icing on the cake is the new requirement for two-factor authentication for most MCPS apps, which means you have to find a classroom with windows to the outside or else find a spot some distance away. |
Who do you think will stop a school shooter? Your DEI representative? What is the harm in having an armed police officer? |
I think they're before. Anybody actually has a conversation about school safety. They should volunteer to be part of a school lockdown drill. During when students are instructed to lock the doors, cover windows and hide in silence. A kid who is trying to call 911 would be a potential danger to themselves or others. |
Mcps wifi is a thing |
More likely to hurt children when there are armed guards on campus and and at least two school shootings (uvalde and Parkland the police did nothing to help the children.) uvalde The kids had cell phones and were calling for help and the police did nothing because they assumed the kids were dead. |
Actually, MCPS WIFI is not very reliable in many buildings because of the cinder block walls. It's also one of the reasons that other emergency panic buttons aren't able to be used at this point. At a recent meeting, parents and admin tried to pull out phones and contact emergency services and could not. |
You think that resource officers are going to hurt students? What? Will a resource officer prevent any and everything? No, but it's a deterrent and could save lives by neutralizing a shooter before the police can get there. |
It's interesting times when Cato and ACLU agree on something https://www.aclu-wa.org/story/school-resource-officers-when-cure-worse-disease https://www.cato.org/blog/school-resource-officers-police-presence-schools-doing-more-harm-good |

These have nothing to do with elementary schools. Are you worried your elementary school kids are going to be arrested? The SRO in elementary schools are there to stop a school shooter. They can also improve relationships with the kids at a young age, establishing relationships. |
I would still much rather have a teacher establishing a relationship with my kid than a rent a cop. |
Sure, in a fantasy world. In reality, I'd much rather have one good person with a gun between my child and a shooter. Or at least have cell service, infrastructure assessments and emergency call buttons in every room and the hallway. |
