Clarify this. It reads like you are inferring that UVA takes the top students from NOVA and the rest of the state admits are charity. If so you are both arrogant and wrong. |
UC Berkley |
NP here. I believe there are geographic quotas. Carolina does this as well. |
Since Berkeley is test blind, there's more of a luck factor. It's like throwing darts. Whereas UNC OOS does tend to get the academically gifted students. But then they're stuck with the in-state UNC students who are not always particularly remarkable. It's why nationally, Michigan is the overall best public university in America. They take 50 percent from OOS, so everyone is pretty bright in Ann Arbor. |
Nope. Chapel Hill 8%. Berkeley 8-10%. |
Ours got in from FCPS. 4.0/4.6/1580. Nothing spectacular for ECs. |
Michigan is still difficult. They take 8,000 students a year. Of those, 4,000 at least need to be from in state. That leaves 4,000 seats. An Ivy tends to have between 1,000 - 2,000 seats as they keep their student classes low to keep acceptance rates low. |
Seems like hyperbole to me. |
OP, DD applied to UNC and did not get in. Accepted and considered: Miami of Ohio, Indiana University. Chose University of Connecticut. Accepted and did not consider VT, Penn State. Did not get into UFlorida. Waitlisted UVA |
Without a doubt. UNC out-of-state admission is just as competitive as the Ivies. They'll likely receive close to 40,000 applications for Fall 2025 and extend admission offers to roughly 3,300 to get their desired OOS enrollment. UNC Chapel is much more competitive for out-of-state than Michigan and UVA. |
Ours is 10%. Higher average GPA than Duke. Slightly lower SAT. UVA is 14% with a lower GPA and SAT. Michigan is 19% with a lower GPA and SAT. |
So you are saying that it would not be ideal to attend a school that would take you? |
NP here, but I have heard this as a negative, too. The OOS kids are tippy top stats kids. The in-state kids are just regular kids, especially from the more rural parts of NC. I know a young adult who went there and he said he was really disappointed with this aspect. |
I think you need to re-read my words. I said the in-state kids aren’t dummies compared to the oos kids, referenced the the two areas I’ve lived in, and drew a comparison to UVA admissions from the area I’m familiar with. I did not say a thing about the rest of NC or VA except to include them as part of the “non-dummy” in-state student group. You’re digging for an insult where there isn’t one. |
Just because a kid is from a rural part of NC (or anywhere else) doesn't mean they aren't smart or super smart. This is a really bigoted thing to write or imply. It blows my mind that people make an assumption that a kid from instate is dumber than an OOS. Why? Is NC full of dumb kids? No, it isn't. Do you say the same thing about UVA kids who are in state? WITW is wrong with you? I went there. I didn't hear about it from someone who went there or know someone who went there or once worked with a guy who went there. The instate kids were plenty smart. |
