My mom and stepdad are in Punta Gorda and they haven't evacuated. I'm both pissed and worried. |
That's good. I probably would have texted her goodbye and "hope your death isn't too painful" just to drive it home. |
I'm a liberal democrat who lives on a barrier island in a hurricane-prone area and I've never evacuated during "mandatory" evacuations. It's personal choice and has nothing to do with being MAGA or not and trusting the government or not.
I believe in climate change, I believe in science. Still staying put. |
Good for you. Hope you survive. |
Sounds like her husband is going to get them both killed. Or at least put other people’s lives at risk to save them. Toxic masculinity. |
A “personal” choice that burdens rescuers and puts their lives at risk. |
Write your social security number on your torso so they can identify your body. |
No, none of us who stay expect any help except from each other. It's entertaining how you all are trying so hard to be insulting when I was simply trying to offer a different perspective. As usual though, the posters of DCUM who don't live in the affected areas and don't go through hurricane scares annually are experts on what it's like and what the characteristics of the people who live there are. |
When you're on the roof with rising waters, the Coast Guard will put themselves at risk to save you. Unless your neighbors own mitary grade helicopters this idea that you will be able to bail yourselves out is nuts. I grew up in Florida, I lived through the "scares". The government would much rather you evacuate for no reason than underestimate and you die. They err on the side of caution and you should too. |
Generally you only have to drive around 10 or 20 miles inland for shelter at a safe facility.
For those staying they need to have a ladder ready and an axe in case they need to cut through the roof to get on the roof in case of flooding. They also need to be prepared to stay in the bathtubs during the high winds for safety. In the coastal areas residents can expect power out for weeks from lines down and possibly water shut off. Also, if you have family members not evacuating expect cell service to be down due to cell service down and high volume of calls. Cell service can be down for days. If your family member still has a landline these generally will work during the storms. Get landline numbers of your family member or their neighbors. |
I hope they write all essential information about their identities and next of kin in permanent marker on their limbs. |
But we do see the people stranded on their roof to escape the flood waters, awaiting rescue. |
Ya'll don't remember the dead bodies floating around New Orleans after Katrina?
I don't know why those in an evacuation area don't drive 7 miles inland to a school shelter or drive 2 hours over to Orlando. In Orlando you can at least sit in an air conditioned hotel lobby if no rooms are available. |
I'd ask them where they keep their wills and their important documents. |
This isn’t quite the scare tactic you think it is. You’ve posted this many times. You’re free to go now. |
