I am flabbergasted! How does something like this happen in a place like this, now? (FCPS)

“ Dear XXXXXXXX Community,

We have recently been made aware of a student using a hate symbol while in class.

We want to be clear that FCPS does not tolerate this kind of behavior in our schools. It is unacceptable that any student at XXXXXXXX High School feels that this is appropriate behavior. This is not the kind of school community we seek to cultivate. We have made a commitment in FCPS that any time these situations arise, we will share them with our school community to send a clear message that we denounce these actions.

Every student in FCPS has the right to feel safe and affirmed in our schools. Words matter, no matter the context, no matter the situation. In partnership with the Chief Equity Office, we will continue to work within our school community to have dialogues about dignity, humanization and belonging. I ask you to engage in these same conversations at home.

Below are two resources that can also help guide your conversations at home:

Our students can make a difference in this world by learning to embrace and value our differences instead of using them to divide us.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly. I would like to hear your ideas about making McLean High School a more welcoming and culturally responsive environment for all.

Ellen Reilly”

I'm only flabbergasted you made a big deal of keeping the school private and then didn't take the name of the high school or the administrator out of your email.

This. And that you have a teenager, in high school, and are flabbergasted by this email.

Is this the first time you have read an email like this? Talk to your kids, tell them it’s serious and not to every say or draw or use any hate speech for any reason. Sometimes teens say it’s a joke and it’s not. That’s all you can do.

4 teens drew swastikas on their tests in German class. The teacher is Jewish. 3 of the 4 sets of parents are horrified. One set thinks it wasn't their kid. Of course.

WOW!
I hope they are being disciplined and any colleges they applied to will be notified.

Principal at our school is sending these “hate speech” enails out as well I guess anytime someone reportedly uses or discovers a slur of some kind on a bathroom wall or whatever, but I’m not really sure how it does much good to be so generic.
Also why does no one ever question why speech that is agreeable to everyone needs to be protected? Like isn’t the point of the first amendment to allow people the right to state opinions and use words even if other people don’t like it or agree?
I get having restrictions on threatening speech. But if I say “blonde guys are all dicks!” isn’t it my right as a citizen to have and state that hateful opinion if I want to?

My guess would be a swastika

So MAGA poster fits

Actually. No. The ones with the swastikas are the same people who think what happened on October 7 2024 is acceptable. The same people marching through the streets with their keffiyeh and shutting down college campuses. Those are the people that you need to worry about.

What college campuses got “shut down?”

I think the PP is being facetious because of course that's not a hate symbol - much as certain people really wanted to make it so.

DP. Your deliberately obtuse act is not cute.

Thanks.

I checked with DD. She hadn’t heard about it (until I showed her the FCPS email). But believes one of the teachers of German is not a German native.

This is a very serious matter, but as someone whose career has a nexus to information security and privacy, I'm dying laughing that the OP took the time to xxxx out the name of the school but missed it once and left in the name of the principal.
