Fell Down Stairs

Just a kick in the pants. Goodnight.

I used to fall and I just thought that I slipped but turns out I had a pinched nerve and one day, I kept falling and had to have an emergency lumbar fusion and the quad in my leg had atrophied. I was in locked leg brace for almost a year. I couldn't drive and I had to learn to walk again. So, please, if you fall again, see an orthopedist.

Yep, but give them a very very good wash before using inside your home.

54 year old here. I'm taking this as a reminder that I need to schedule my first dexa scan.

There are now non-slip stains that you can treat hardwood with. I’m beginning the process of removing my upstairs carpet and plan to take the carpet off the stairs, and redo them using this treatment.

Slipped on stairs at home, fell on my rear, and broke my coccyx! Endured months of pain and inactivity. Finally some very embarrassing therapy fixed the issue.

So does a runner on hardwood floors help mitigate the risk or just avoid wearing socks?

We don't have a banister on the carpeted stairs that lead to our finished basement. I know I know it's pretty bad that we allow this and we need to get one put in. anyway kids love it because they all use it as a jumping spot. I unfortunately was heading down those stairs pretty quickly and leaned over to check something out on the carpet and in a freak way, somehow fell off the stairs, banged my abdomen into the steps and landed on my back. Had a bruise across the entire width of my abdomen and an internal hematoma, and it looked like I had been in a car accident. To this day, it felt like something pushed me from behind since I fell with such force but no one was there to do that. Anyway I'm pretty fit and this really took a number on my abdomen and back at the time and needed time to recover. Stairs are weird and the cause of strange accidents.

Is this a serious question? Have we lost all common sense!?

Happened to my teen. We are getting a runner for stairs. Get treads or a runner.

Thanks for this reminder. We're in a home with three levels and hardwood stairs. Any suggestions for treads or runners that folks have found both practical and attractive?

I fell recently in bare feet and on my non-carpeted stairs. My feet were super dry and there just was no friction to keep my foot in place, which was aggravated by my stepping too far forward on the step and losing my balance. I'm in my 60's and very lucky I was near the bottom already.
Now, I hold on with both hands (rails on both sides already) and make sure my foot is solidly on each step.
I live alone, too, so super scary prospect.

Not me. No stairs house.

What's up with childish replies that are so dumb? Are you proud to be so petty? Please make sure you never go anywhere where there are stairs. You are neither witty, nor sassy. More like a mo*on.

I am just another member of zero risk crew here on DCUM. I don't walk under trees. I have seen pictures of the ocean from a suitably distant location so I don't get killed by any rogue waves or sharks.

That’s so sad.

Same.

I will not drive on the beltway. It’s insanely unsafe.

I'm 54 and fell down almost the entire flight of stairs. The whole side of my body was horribly bruised. I'm lucky nothing broke but the recovery was rough.
