Reminder to avoid offensive Halloween costumes

So can I not go as a pregnant cheerleader or pregnant nun?

I am a former pregnant person, former cheerleader and former Catholic.

I’m not Asian, but I found it highly offensive and very inappropriate for the workplace. Also, once while trick-or-treating with my kids, there were people dressed up as middle easterners carry bloody swords and the like. Again, very offensive.

Thank you OP for the reminder. It is sadly needed.

Okay, White lady. You can stop now. You have permission to stop being offended on other people's behalf and go peacefully about your day without policing other people.

I’m not White, idiot.

Your post reads like a post from a White lady. If you're not White, then stop appropriating Whiteness with your posting style.

I am not a troll. This is a serious issue.

It's really, really not. There are real problems in the world and people putting on a stupid costume once a year is not one of them.

Kind of like how you are offended by this post.

Not offended. Just pointing out stupidity.

How about the hobo costume, is that back?

As you select costumes for yourself and your child, please avoid costumes which are culturally insensitive, as well as costumes that are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, sizeist, or ageist.

Not sure you understand the point of Halloween. It is not a time to be culturally sensitive and inoffensive.

Losing our sense of humor did us no favors. A day to cross lines is good for a healthy society. This post shows we do not have that.

Yes, a general rule is do not put on costumes that feature clothing, body modifications, or hair that are common to another ethnicity but not your own.

Example: non-Black people should not wear afros, non-Indian people should not wear bindis

Come on! Halloween IS NOT A POLITICALLY CORRECT occasion.

Whose rule is that? Is it in the town handbook, next to "Halloween will occur on Saturday at 5 pm, regardless of when the 31st is"?

Bye OP. Everyone is offended by everything. There would be no costumes left if we adhere to this.

Even the Barbie movie was offensive.

There's nothwrong with dressing up as a corn cob.

Look, going as President Taft is fine and going as "a fat person" is not. Going as Moana is fine, going as "a Polynesian" is not. This isn't hard.

Still not safe. I’ve been harassed here for thinking it’s ok for a white person to dress up as a black entertainer they adore.

I’m pretty far left and this Halloween costume stuff drives me nuts. Everything is offensive to someone.

You think trolls don't post about serious issues just to rile people up? Can we have a little perspective about what constitutes a serious issue? My three year old dressing up like her hero Pocahontas...it's not that. The VA state legislature trying to police history and what our kids learn? That. That's serious. When you make everything serious nothing is serious.

I AM JAPANESE. YOU CAN DRESS IN A KIMONO OR YUKATA OR ANY APPROXIMATION THEREOF. WITH THE MAKE-UP, THE GETA, THE FAN, THE HAIRDO, WHATEVER YOU FIND.

What is wrong with you???

Halloween is the event where this should be allowed. Not at any other time. Let go of your prejudices and biases and preconceived notions just for a short period of time.

My daughter is mixed white-asian and would look very nice as Pocahontas, with her long braids. I don't care at all whether some people find this offensive.

Dressing up as a SEX WORKER AT WORK is okay with you? Ok then!
